Decided to stay with the 2500. Thanks peeps.

So I'm feeling like I got my 2500 in a rush since I found it for such a good price. But at times I find myself regretting not having gone for the 1000. Why? One simple reason. I'd love to be able to lug my MPC around, but goddamn that 2500 is bulky. Which is why I've thought about trading it for a 1000 (plus some cash, of course). Sure I'd be left with 2 Q-link sliders instead of 4. Sure the pads are slightly smaller. Sure the screen wont tilt. But these are sacrifices that I may be willing to make in order to gain mobility.

OS-wise, I don't feel like i'd be suffering too much, since JJOS gives both machines almost the same functionality.

So what do you guys think? Would it be a dumb move to trade my 2500 for a 1000 and extra cash, or to sell my 2500 and buy a 1000? Should I just stick to the 2500, be happy that I have the more "fully featured / powerful" machine and forget about the whole mobility thing?

i say you should have a custom case made for the 2500... or find one that it fits in nice and snug....

what if you run into problems with the 1000? you will wish you never traded your superior machine.

I think you gave yourself enough reasons to do the switch. Go for it. Try to get a used 1000 with the JJ OS installed already, save you some $$.

I also have the 2500. Since I used in only in my home studio, I don't have the problem of portability.

Just buy a 500 if you want portability and keep the 2500.

Thanks. That makes some sense, but to be honest, my goal is not to spend more money. The goal would be to use the money from the 2500 sale to get the 1000 and have some leftover cash.

Plus the 12 pad thing would probably annoy me. I have bad OCD when it comes to this. i NEED the 16 pads

The 1000 doesn't have enough outs..

I haven't used a 2500 but by my estimates it's the closest you can get to the classic MPCs style wise and build wise without going into the overkill and bulky 5000 territory. The tracks you make a 500 could be tweaked on the 2500 and vice versa.

If ur willing to sacrafice the extra features on the 2500 for mobility, then what are u waiting for?

That's a good question. I don't know. I'm still afraid of regretting my decision down the line, for some reason.

Anyways I was thinking... i do intend to get an Akai APC40 (look it up, if you don't know what it is) in the summer once they are released, to use with Ableton Live. So... do I really need a portable MPC? Can't I just make my music on my big, bulky MPC 2500, record it on Live, and then prepare my live sets with these recordings to be played be the APC40?

Still, having an APC40 controlling Live is a different beast from an MPC. I may still want to have an actual MPC that I can carry with me almost anywhere without problem.

If u have a laptop with ableton live, and u master ableton (better then the mp in live sessions), then I think ableton live is the best decision. But if u want to do some realtime sample triggering (like playing drumlines with one shots), then it might be better to have an mpc or at least an mpd. I think the buttons and pads on the apc were designed for trackmutes and to select sequences and loops. It might be also for (poor) sample triggering, but not mpc like.

But if u have to sell the mpc for the apc, then u also have to ask urself if u can live without the mp.

Unless you use JJOS, which it seems most 1k and 2k5 users do (and quite rightly IMO.)

A 1k as a portable scratchpad while on the move, 2k5 at home, both running the same version of JJOS

yeah totally different, I know. I'm not planning to sell my MPC for the APC though. I actually pre-ordered the APC a few months ago. The only reason I'd sell my MPC 2500 would just be to get a 1000 and extra cash.

I'm pretty good with Ableton Live. I've been using it since version 4 (2005-ish) so I'm definitely comfortable with it. I may just be happy with the Ableton + APC combo for live gigs (mostly clip launching and some keyboard playing with my microkorg), then keep the MPC strictly for studio tasks.

I may end up sticking to the 2500 in that case.
