Japanese Classical?

Whats the Japanese Classical music called? Is there a name for it? Stuff like this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOLAtoB6 ... re=related (distorted I think due to recording, but still).

This is the stuff I want to be sampling.

I dont have speakers on this computer but I think your looking for Japanese Koto music.

Some sick shit is on those records.

God knows where I digg this sort of stuff from. Not the usual genre you find in your local rare records store.

You have to find a record spot that sells imports. I got a spot close to my house that sells a sh!t ton of this stuff but its overpriced. They ask for like $15 and up for these records. Try ebay

that sounds more like a piece of western classical music played on a piano, violin and cello with the occasional bit of traditional bamboo flute.

For traditional chinese music... online might be easier. Try the torrent sites.. use words like:

sounds of the orient

opium sound track or opium sounds (i know it sounds bad, and it sounds like you would get more afghan sounding stuff but I have had luck with that)

also, try searching by instrument names such as:

guchin, yangchin, pipa, etc...



As for records, it might be more of a luck thing to find stuff.


as for japanese music, well if you want kodo drums then cool.. but maybe find out the names of traditional japanese intruments that you like and search mininova, isohunt etc... or what ever downloading service you use.

One of the record collecting terms for this type of music is called Exotica. This genre was popular in the US post WWII. You can use Exotica as a keyword on eBay to turn up similar albums...

If you don't want to go the eBay route, these types of LPs often end up end up at thrift stores.
