yeah but if you look at the post i quoted above you'll see that he was still not sure and he said that it could just as well be a maximum of 256 sounds which would mean 4 programs..

i think so too but that is exactly the case with the 2000XL, man!

i don't know if that is your own painted 2KXL you're rocking in your avatar but if it is then you should know that you can't use more than 4 active programs (even if you got maxed out ram) while in the manual it says that it can hold up to 24 programs in its memory. so what's the point of that?

Yeah, that's my XL. But I've never used more than 2 programs at a time on it, so I couldn't tell you. But on my 2500, I have used up to 6-8 programs in a single beat, but not with hundreds of sounds though! In any case, if you plan on gettin a 2500, you could always midi it up with your XL to utilize the extra programs and sounds!

I'm sorry I don't know the definitive answer but I've currently used 8-10 different programs in a beat and I've hardly really touched the thing so I hope you can go up to the maximum. Either way that shows it's definitely more than the 4 on the 2000xl.

on jj os samples are numbered 1 to 999 , ive loaded up a lot (600+)before but have never tried to go past 999 .

@blinkinlights: what do you want to do with that many programs? is this for production work or for a live set?

maybe you can get to your goals by using ableton live with the new akai control surface apc40?
that way you can be sure that the only limit for simultanious samples, programs and effects is the power of your computer!

anyways i will try tonight if i run into any barriers with the mpc 2500 and will report back.

it's just for production work.. i don't even need that many more than 4 but sometimes i think just 5 or 6 would be cool..
also i loved the fact that the 4000 has 6 pad banks.. that'd make things easier for me as well..

The 2500 ain't that much different. The main difference is mode on the 2500 verses shift on the XL. The 2500 is also a lot faster and has a lot more conveniences over the XL, especially chop shop. However, if you don't really sample a lot, I would just stick with the XL, unless you need the 4 midi outs. But that's just me.

i do sample pretty much exclusively..

yeah, i saw how fast that mutha loads. few seconds and you're good to go.
on my XL i got stuff that takes about two minutes to load..

i guess i'm gonna step up sooner or later anyway and i know it's not gonna be that hard to switch.
it's just that i'm real familiar with the xl and i hate learning new machines..
i don't like trying around and experimenting i just wanna do my thing and when i tried that stuff on a 2500 i was pretty much lost.

Man, I hopped on the 2500 and was good to go in minutes. I picked it up pretty easily for not having a manual when I first tried it. I spent a good hour with it though. I still haven't really touched the manual. I usually learn everything by trying it and foolin around with all the functions. But my work flow was much slower when I got the XL, but nothing ridiculous.

I had a bit of a hard time going from an XL to a 2500, but learned to love it. Onboard outs, speed, usb. Its a winner even though it feels like a toy compared to the XL.. If you cop the JJOS, it's just no comp if you are trying to work mostly in the box.

Making the switch was the best thing I have done all year, as the 2500 for me is a much more functional and rounded machine than the XL. Ok it has crappy side panels and an annoying jog dial, but the screen is bigger and better and the pads are nearly identical to the XL... oh yeah, there's also this crazy third party OS that everyone bangs on about too...

the 2500 can only handle 998 samples in memory, beyond this it will load more samples but you won't find the samplename in list. sample #999 is in memory but you can't address it. it's a bug (tested in XL)
i don't like this limit, it's easy to reach if you load directorys with short one shot drumsamples...

Having the ability to load more than 1000 sounds into memory would be my least required feature.

I think your tracks are excellent Olsen, but I don't hear anything that would require the ability to load over 1000 sounds into memory. Maybe your working method needs tweaking a little bit?
