Reviews and questions about the entry-level MPC500

Wassup everyone,

I'm new to the forum's and new to the MPC500. I love the machine but I'm having a couple of problems with it!

Firstly, when I connect it via usb i cannot access it from my mac or windows laptop. It says USB : Connected and The windows laptop recognises it but then it doesn't show in My Computer.

Secondly, I cannot save on it..... I have the AKAI 128mb MPC sound library CF card in it. I thought that the card may be the problem so I bought another card and now the MPC completely slows down (almost to a halt) when I access the save menu.

I need help... I want to get using it asap!

Thanks

B

1- You should power the mpc first and then start up your computer. Is it running XP or Vista? Maybe the older Windows is not picking it up.

2- That 128mb cf card does not subtitute for the 128mb RAM that you need to save large files of samples. You're probably saving more than what the 16mb RAM can handle. Or you installed a cf card over 2gb, because a 16gb can slow the 500 drasticly. Get a 1gb or a 2gb card.

Save is a habit you must get into. Save entire project works.

Thanks for the quick reply.

My laptop is on xp but my Mac has the latest OS so one of them should pick it up.

I've tried to save a single sequence with barely anything on and that won't even save.

What is the slot above the battery pack for btw?

first things first (the slot above it is for the 128mb Memory that you need to get for your mpc500)

you need to upgrade your mpc's ram to 128mb RAM, then try to save, make sure you don't have too much stuff on your cf card too, if u still have stock that is it doesn't take much to fill it up quick with a load of shit. you might as well like dude above said get a 2 gb cf card because you're going about it wrong my dude. you get all that done and you should be on your way. but if that's not the problem then try to state exactly what went wrong with it so people can try to help u better

Thanks for that man, I'll get a 128 RAM asap.

The thing is, when I try to save (either on the 128 cf card or the 512 that I have) it does not give me the option to press DO IT (the light doesn't come on and when I press it nothing happens). The buttons working fine, it just wont allow me to save.

It also moves very slowly, freezing and unfreezing, when on the load or save screens whilst any memory card is in it.

I also tried to update my MPC (hoping it'll help the problem), but instead of going through to the update screen it stops at:

OS UPDATE MODE
TOTAL : 16 MB

It will not go past this screen.

Sounds like you're doing everything right. Your MPC500 must be warped. Secondhand's always a gamble.

Either return it or if you can't, have a certified Akai dealer take a look at it. You can also pm sonseelye, who is a member here, he repairs and customizes MPCs.

i left my shit alone dawg i never touched the operating system and mine works fine.
try putting ur cf card into your computer and back up all your shit on there then put ur cf card in and save whatever you need on it. the only time it should slow down or seemingly freeze on you is when you're saving big projects like 5 minute beats and shit other than that man i dont know what to tell you but im here to help man.

Did you try formating the card in the 500?

Also whenever I save I almost alway make a new folder and save all programs and samples and then all sequences and songs in that same folder.
