Trying to use my MPC with the sounds in Reason

Now iv searched all over and iv watched the videos on how to use Reason as a sound module for my MPC1000, to no avail.

Now id like to explain my setup first so people could better understand what could be wrong with my setup..

I got an Mbox2, Mpc1000, my PC, a midi controller WITHOUT a USB port, and rokit monitors.

EDIT: I got a MIDI out goin from my controller into the mpc, and a midi out goin from the MPC to the Mbox.. and all thats allowing me in Reason is to control my MPC sounds with my MIDI controller, and i wanna be using the controller for the REASON sounds to record over my mpc sounds

now i cant figure out how to get my sound to play by hooking up my MPC to the mbox, the dude at the music store said id need 2 of these:

now i dont know how i would use these, as the ends of them would connect only to the 2 Mic inputs of the mbox:

so basically im stumped as to how to connect the mpc to the mbox and get sound coming outta the monitors.. so iv just been bypassing my computer/mbox completely and just hookin the monitors up to the MPC

Now the problem i believe is, is that in all the videos of people using the MPC with Reason as a sound module, they had MIDI controllers with USB inputs, mine doesnt. Its just midi in and midi out, so that could probably be the reason why my connection is messed up..


So basically im trying to use my MPC for my drums and everything and use Reason for the synths and everything.

I just got my MPC 1000 this week so I'm still figuring things out, but I'm basically doing what you are trying to do: I'm using the MPC for drums and Reason for a synth.

I have a cheesy Musicstar midi controller (gonna upgrade soon) without a usb connection, it only has a midi out. I'm also using an M-Audio audiophile sound card.

I have the midi controller going into the MPC and I have the MPC going into the sound card. So it's midi controller -> MPC -> sound card -> PC.

I sequence the drums on track 1 on the MPC. To play Reason, I go to track 2 on the MPC, change the midi field to 1A. Now midi controller is going through the MPC and playing reason. There's not much that needs to be done in Reason, in Preferences/Midi just set the sequencer port to your sound card.

For recording the synths on the MPC, I play the midi controller while the MPC is recording, so I get the sequence recorded on the MPC. After I have the sequence the way I like, I play the MPC while recording the sounds from Reason.

One problem I have is that sometimes the keys trigger pads on the MPC while I'm playing the midi controller, so I still have some things to figure out. Like I said, I just got my 1K on Monday, so I'm still in the process of figuring out the most efficient way to do things.

i guess a better question would to be how to hook the MPC up to the mbox2 specifically?


the dude told me id need those two TRS cables i posted above..

so do i only need 2 MIDI cables? 1 going from the controller to the Mpc and one goin from the mpc to the mbox.. then my monitors hooked up to the mbox?

and like you said when i connect Controller>MPC>Mbox when i play the keyboard it plays my samples from the MPC, when i want it to be playing the sounds from Reason


Iv managed to get my MPC drums playing through Reason, but my controller is only playing my MPC samples and pads not the Reason sounds

and i can record my MPC drum patterns in Reason, but cant play them back through the monitors by pressing play in Reason

Yeah that's all I have is midi cables connecting the controller, MPC and sound card. Then the sound card is connected to the PC by usb.

Ok, figured out one part. In order to not trigger sounds on the MPC when I don't want to I went to the program window [Mode][Pad 7], then [F4](note). The screen then shows what key from the controller is triggering the pad. Hit a pad and the key that is triggering it will become highlighted on the screen. You can then change the key with the data wheel. I can't turn it off, so what I did is turn it all the way down to 35(B 0) since I'm not using the 0 octave on the controller.

That should take care of the keys triggering sounds on the MPC pads, as far as Reason not playing I don't know, maybe someone with an Mbox can help you.

And if I described a roundabout way of not making the controller trigger pads, maybe someone with a little more experience knows a better way.

I think u must have missed something when u watched the vid.

Midicontoler with midicable into mpc's midi in.
Midi cable from mpc's midi out to m-box mini in.
For audio u need normal jack cables.(output mpc+jack going into m-box jacks in)

In the mpc select a track in wich u want to record the midi data that controls/commands/triggers reason.
Switch it from drum to midi track, program OFF, and select the right midichannel. (best to start with 1A)

Go to Reason Hardware Device on top of the reason rack, open it, and select advanced midi device.
Now u see 16 channels. u can assign an instrument to each channel. Make sure the instrument u want to play is assigned to the same channel in reason as in ur mpc.

Turn masterkeyboard off in reason.

wierd, i can get the sounds to play and record on my pads, but using my MIDI keyboard, they will not record. anyone help me here?

I'm using MPC 1K (JJOS1), Powerbook G4, Reason 3, M-Audio Firewire410, and a Korg Kontrol49 MIDI keyboard.

I've got:

- USB Cable connecting the Kontrol49 to my Powerbook.
- MIDI cable going from "MIDI Out" of the Firewire 410 into "MIDI IN 1" of my MPC
- MIDI cable going from "MIDI Out A" of the MPC into "MIDI In" of the Firewire 410.

Like I said, I can play the sounds from the keyboard and the pads just fine - but the MPC will only record the sounds played from the pads, and not the keyboard.

Do I need to connect a third cable from the MPC to the Kontrol49?
