I have a 3000 and 2000xl and they seem the same, the differents comes when I add lots of notes to the 3000 some lag which makes it sound a little different,. I think its cause its cpu cant handle as much. sometimes it sounds cool, I use the 3000 for most of my drums unless I want it to be right on.

the same happens with the 2000
(the lag)

Haha, do you mean to say that the legendary sound is ... MIDI buffer overflow?

hahaha.

Guess I'll save my money.

I don't have a 3000 so I don't know about that. On the Fantom and QY you can quantize for shuffle with a variable percentage. Add a bit of delay (time shift), which the MPC4000 also has in its quantization and you've got an awesome dragging shuffle going on.

LOL. This shyt is funny. Im not gonna act like Im some big name producer yet, with plaques and grammy's in shyt. But I will tell you this. These cats that dismiss the difference in "feel" of the swing in sequencers, are speaking from straight ignorance or just no experience. From DAW to MPC to MV's and all the like. They ALL have a difference in timing. Just cause the specs are the same doesnt mean the performance will be. Ive got a "v6" Saturn ION outside, obviously doesnt come close to my boys "v6" Benz. Why? Multiple varied reasons. Those variables are the factors that make the difference. Architecture, design, quality of parts. It all contributes. So, "96pqn" sequencers are NOT all created equal.

To the point, 3000's swing in MY opinion does sound different than the 4000's swing. Also in my opinion better. Can the 4000 mimic the 3000's swing? Probably not. But since the 4000 has a "strength" option for the quantize. You can get a varied amount of results, possibly close to a 3000.

End of the day hardware sequencers usually dominate the performance and "feel" of software. MPC, MV's, etc.. are basically PC's with a rigid 1 track mind. So the "swing" on most of these machine sound "good".

This is turning into a comparsion thread ha, ha and it should be about truth!

Truth is subjective to the user plain and simple and adding different resolutions from 96ppq to 960 ppq will have subtle different if you listen to most songs made with a particular ppq over time. But all the mpcs are based on the same software code which Roger Linn sold to Akai will each model additions to the resolution and added features.

By the way only the 5k has strength quantize and triplets percentage neither the 3k or 4k has those functions.

I use both the 3k and 4k in my lab (gear lust) but I mostly use the 4k. As the 3k has a smaller res is easy to dial 1/16 56% with 9 ticks on a track. However with the 4k I can dial in the whole sequence if I wish realtime before I apply it a bit more by ear.

Anyways really though.

The Truth is the magic feel is exactly what jacpot says
turn off quantize and double your tempo to play with a human
feel.

P.S. On the 4k you have the option of using [off 1/96 timing] too !

My two cents

To me,2000XL and 3000 have a huge difference in swing settings..in fact the 2k is not even comparable (you can see that,by moving a note eg from position 01.04.000 to 01.04.001, the affect of quantisation is not that smooth). As for the 4000 vs 3000,sound approximately the same.

Oh I forgot the 3k has (off 384) timing too if it makes any difference to the 4k (off 1/96) and (off 960).

If one of you has some time to post some midi sequences of quantized 16th notes at different percentages I have a way of testing this out and comparing the quantize of these machines down to the tick. Just post one .mid file per sequence and label the sequences with the percentages.

I was just testing the 5k and it does quantize the swing different than my DAW. At 50% and 67%(triplets) there is no extra feel so those settings are just like anything else but the other swing percentages are shifted in a different way. I would like to test a 3k and 2kXL along with a 2500 to see if they behave different.

This will only test the effects of swing quantize. It won't test how tight the playback timing is of the machines.

If anyone wants to do it, just set T.C. note value to 1/16th and swing to 51%. You can use note repeat to record a hi hat pattern on a 2 bar sequence. Then copy the sequence 16 times and use timing correct on each. Sequence 1 would be 51%, Sequence 2 would be 52, to sequence 16 66% Save each sequence to the same folder and transfer to computer.

Never used a 3k, 4k sounds good to me. I don't use quantize unless I want a specific sound that calls for it.

4k sequencer sounds good to me, it's resolution is high enough to catch all my imperfections when I turn quantize off...

I like that
