Track Mute (inverted) Groups [request?]

Using JJOS2XL and I was wondering if there was any way to group tracks into mute groups, like you can with pads.

I do not mean the way it has been incorporated into Akai OS1.1, where you can mute/unmute multiple tracks with one pad but more or less the exact opposite, pretty much how pad mute groups works.

So is there any way to set groups of tracks so that they can't be on at the same time? IE unmuting one track automatically mutes the linked one that was playing. I'm guessing not... Would anybody else likely find this useful enough to make it worth suggesting?

The reason why is because I often have four different variants of a part (both samples and MIDI) but will only ever want one of them playing at a time. Currently I'm having to use a track page for grouping together similar types of tracks where having it progress through the 4 banks would be more user-friendly.

Really? I didn't know you could group tracks together and mute multiple tracks simultaneously with the press of one pad in the Akai OS1.1. I thought this was only on the MPC5000. Anyway, you can't do that on the JJ OS. There's no track mute group. That's a feature I would love to have added someday. I've submitted a request for it a short while back and even spent hours drawing up a GUI design explaining how it could be implemented.

My idea of implementation is not exactly the same as yours, in which pressing a pad would automatically mute a group of tracks linked to it, while unmuting another group of tracks. Is that right? I'm sorta confused.

Anyway, my idea of implementation is that you would assign a certain tracks to a mute group and a pad would correspond to that mute group. That way, you can assign your different parts to different mute groups. You can then mute and unmute groups of tracks by pressing the individual pads that correspond to the mute group of the tracks. All of the tracks within that same mute group would be muted/unmuted simultaneously. I also included in my request that a feature that would allow the track mute/unmutes to be quantized, similar how the "Next Sequence" screen in "IMMEDIATE PLAY" works.

Although I've already submitted this request, I got a response from JJ basically saying that he was too busy on the Windows sequencer right now. He might consider it after the Windows sequencer is completed so I'll probably resend him that request later on after he finishes the Windows sequencer and gets it released.



As is, I often have three or four different parts (tracks) that I want to mute/unmute at the same time during a sequence and I have to press 3 or 4 pads at the same time!!!! If I had track mute groups, I could just press one pad and mute/unmute that group of tracks and press other pad to mute/unmute another group of tracks, etc..... That would be sweet!!!!!

Yeah I see what you're saying and from I can see it seems to be pretty much how it's been added to the official OS. I didn't know about it either until I thought I would give the manual addendums a quick look over earlier. Have a look at pages 6/7.

Pads can now be grouped together, so hitting one pad will affect the other pads in
the same group. MUTE GROUP is accessed by pressing [F2] (GROUP) from the
TRACK MUTE page.

Yeah kinda. It would work basically the same as pad mutes do, where you can choose a bunch of pads to work in mono mode together (eg pad1 would mute the same from pad1-8 if triggered and they're in the same group.) When progressing through a live sequence you may want to change your parts subtly, where you have similar tracks with slight changes and in the case of MIDI different recorded CC values. You do not want to be sending note information twice, or triggering the same sample on top of itself, and you really don't want to be sending two conflicting CC values to the same device at once.

This has meant I have had to group together similar parts, rather than having it build up over the 4 banks, so that I can hit two pads to unmute one while I mute the original. Also occasional trouble from finger-bounce or not hitting the pad squarely as you are aiming for more than one at once. This would make it a lot neater, and in my personal opinion more useful that grouping tracks to be (un)muted at the same time with one pad.

I would like the "OR" function added to track mutes as kazakore explained. Would be really cool to create different rythm- or melody-tracks and then remix them on the fly during live performance.

Seems like we're in the minority though

The Either/Or option would be great. However, I would like to at least see track mute groups in general as an implementation the the JJ OS because I don't see why the JJ OS shouldn't have it if it's already incorporated in the akai OS. I would think the JJ OS should have ALL of the good features of the akai OS and then some!!!

Maybe it's 2500 only as that's what I have and thus what I looked at. I haven't checked manuals for the 1000 and couldn't even say if it's on the same OS version. Off on holiday shortly so not time to have a look now...

Darn!!!! You're absolutely right. There's no track mute groups in the MPC1000. It's only in the 2500 and 5000.

JJ Please add this for us in OS2XL. We really want/need it!!!!!!!!!!!!
