Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000

I need some help I've been trying to figure out why every time I convert my sequences in SONG MODE to one larger sequence with all the changes and what not like intro, verse, chorus, ect. it wont play back the way i peiced it together instead it just plays all the tracks at once.

I need to figure this out in order to track out my tracks. I've tried reading the manual but it doesnt say much it doesnt even say how to bring up the track mute window but i figured that out.

To breakdown my question in simpler terms how can i get to the window that says MUTE TRACKS IGNORED and REFERENCED TO SEQUENCE 1 like the MPC 1000, 2500 and I think all the other models have? Can this even be done on the MPC 2000 or is there another way of doing this?

if i understand what you're saying correctly, using the mute on song mode wont work, you have to make separate sequences for the tracks you want to play and not to play, then just put the sequences in order u want them to play.

an easy way to do it is to copy the sequence of the track you want muted to a new sequence then hit record on that track and dont play anything so itill but silenced.

However your sequence sounds in main screen, that's how it will sound in song mode. Song mode is just a list of what order to play the sequences and how many times. If something doesn't sound how you want in song mode, chances are it sounds the same way in your Main screen. You can't expect to do sequencing in song screen.

i think i know what you mean. Say you have seq 1 using track 1,2,3 and seq 2 using tracks 2,3,4 but muting track one - track one does exist though - so when you go to song mode and make seq1 + seq2 and want to convert it, it will convert to one sequence but tracks 1-4 will be playing also on the part you dont want. Sofar so good.
to avoid that just press in song-mode ´convert´, on the track status field scroll the wheel to ´off tracks ignored´
that shout help

Thanks for the help but could you maybe be more specific as to where I should go to find "off tracks ignored"? Is this done before or after I convert my song?

i think i know what you are saying. when im in song mode i already have a a bunch of sequences ready to be put in order. do you have an MPC 2000 or xl? that makes a difference because the XL has the next sequence option where you can take sequences in and out just like track mute, but with sequences. anyway, an easy way to do it is by copying your sequences.

so, for example if you have SQ-1 (sequence 1) which has all your parts lets say tracks 1-16, but your verse is tracks 1-8, pre chorus tracks 1-4 and 9-12 and then actual chorus 1-4 and 13-16 and the only way to seperate them is by going into track mute. ok so now you copy SQ-1 to SQ-2 and SQ-3. these technically are the exact same sequences, but now you are going to change them to what the sections in your song are:

in track mute:
SQ-1: tracks 1-8 unmuted
SQ-2: tracks 1-4, 9-12 unmuted, 4-8 muted
SQ-3: tracks 1-4, 13-16 unmuted, 9-12 muted

now, you go into song mode, shift+1 on the XL. highlight where its says "end of song" and push to the right on the data reel. you will see SQ-1 come up. then use the cursor to go down to where it say "end of song" againg and put in SQ-2. do this process with as many Sequences it takes.

i know this was alot of info and i hope this answers your question. :D

No you don't. You can track out songs from song screen. The most basic way to track is hit record on your recording device and hit play all while in song screen.

I've never seen this screen or felt the need to use it. Make your sequences sound exactly how you want, then make them play in the order you want in song screen.

Then how would i be able to record each individual track in my DAW for mixing?? Would i just use the 8 outs??

Are you saying I dont need to use the convert funtion, whhats it for then?? Im just asking because in my other mpc 1000 (which i dont have anymore) it has the options "mute tracks ignored" and "referenced to seq. 1" to choose from when you press convert. If you choose "mute tracks ignored" then press convert, in main screen there would be a new sequence added aside from all the other ones you made which has your entire song with all the changes and drop outs. This makes tracking in my DAW way easier because i would use "track mute" to record each individual track for mixing.

In the time it took you to type that you could have tried it.

so read a bit more of the thread and found that the conver function is confusing? what you are asking and i maybe going off topic now but anyway...the only time i use the convert function [shift+program>highlight sound>open window>convert,F3?] is to convert a sound from stereo to mono or vice versa. the reason why i do this is because i want to record a mono track in my DAW (for most drum tracks, unless its a loop) using the 8 outs. if i assign a pad to one of the 8 assignable outs on the akai and the sound is stereo it will show 1/2, 3/4, 5/6... etc up to eight. even though you have a mono track on your DAW it will still record in stereo. you must convert the sound to mono to get an individual number.

using the 8 assignable outs is a whole other thread, which is probably on here!
hope this helps....

Stereo sounds will take up two outputs so in your daw make a stereo track. I think what works faster than having to convert is hard panning the sounds left or right i.e. Stereo sounds 01.Kick 02.Snare assign them both to 1/2 then pan the kick all the way left and the snare all the way right. Now Kick is on 1 and snare 2. The conversion Sol was talking about is converting your song from song screen into a new sequence.
