many synths are doin nice basses no doubt - but i wouldn't trade my virus for anything - esp. when takin bout synthbasses!
if interface and presets of the virus are an issue - well interface depends on taste and the interface of my virus is perfect! well, next to i got the kb, the one from the c is even better! common ... 30 knobs contollin 30 parameters - both of ya hands are more than busy - what more do you want? sure you must know what the parameters control too ... and workin with presets is boring but thats up to the user! downloading samples and hopin that they're nice and fit into the song your currently workin on is boring aswell imo! btw: the presets or better the available patchsets for the virus are great - but thats not the purpose of gettin a virus imo ...
anyhow - if anything sukks at the virus than its is price but then imo every mpc is overpriced too ... its quit simple – unfortunately great units are expensive …. nearly always
just my opinion ...
but imo the choice which synth to buy comes down on some other things such as
1. the type of music yoa're doin
2. on yourself and the time you want and have to invest in learning an instrument! and
3. the money you're able and willing to invest!
imo the virus is perfect for music styles such as jungle, dnb, house, techno, progressive, industrial, ambient ... nice for hiphop!
if ya want a specific sound such as a classic acoustic bass sound and you want it now you're better of gettin any available sample based synth or sound module - if ya don't mind spendin some time to create some sort of sound that sounds similar to an acoustic bass check out the virus ... or one of the nordleads
money … sukks … esp. when it comes to buy gear!
