MPC's for techno

I know most people here use there mpc's for making dope fly beatz

but are there any people who use it for techno?

I got mine in order to play out live with and my sets seem to be lacking something, when i re write my patterns in from cubase i cant seem to ge the same feeling across, it just sounds like a watered down version.

I play samples from the mpc and it also triggers my 909, they are seperated out onto a mackie which has a sherman filter bank, akai mfc digi tech effects and a compresser so twisting the samples and drums is not a problem.

At the moment i have about 5 sequences for each of my tracks(up to 25 tracks in a sequence) that build as they go on and some samples that are turned of that i can put in as i want. Would i be better writing these sequences as a song?

Anyone and tips or ideas?

Should I just get down with the manual and do some serious work

write a patern with everything you want in your tracks, drum variations etc, then copy the pattern muting all the parts you don't want in different sections,, the go to song mode and chain them

use the 909's fukn sequencer it's part of its sound... a lot of people use the mpc and other akai samplers for techno, etc.... http://www.inthemix.com.au/reviews/music/13014/ a fellow mpc user making some banging minimal tech. you've got a 909 & a compressor and your shit sounds watered down. come on dude the mpc is one of the puchiest drum machines i own, and the 909 i dont even have to say anything. but i will swap u my 606 for it cause they are heaps better.

nano, its not that the sound is watered down, i think it just lacks something and i think i need to get down and write loads more drum patterns and that. also think i'll hook up my nord too it see if i can add more sounds that i can mess with to make it a bit more intresting and move a bit more, and deffo chain them alltogether in song mode.

Hook that nord up and use the MPC to sequence it. The MPC rocks as a live midi sequencer. It's a must for live electronic music in my opinion.

Yes, whatever you do don't have a laptop in your set-up.......Nobody believes you are actually doing anything except playing an audio file & just miming on everything else.

that was another reason i bought a mpc, the last laptop live set i did bored the shit out of me

Dig into that 909 kit on the Nord and sample it up. You can get some real hard kicks off that beast. I used to know some HC producers and along with the 909, we used the nord ALOT for drums. Believe it or not most of them do use AKAI samplers for the drums also. (Omar Santana (MPC3000), Delerium(S5000), and a few people on the D-boy label use 2000xl. Throw some delay on those kicks, and gate 'em to a sine wave. Snares sound good with delays and a good amount of resonance. I make tribal house and used to make Hardcore with my gear, but have been drifting more and more to hip hop. What are your drum patterns missing? Listen to someone you like and see what they do. Studder some kicks and reverse some others. Most of the time you hear a good hard kick, the producer is clipping the signal also to get that thump and distortion. Chop some loops up also and go to town with them (congas, bongos, timbales, djembes).

what other kit are you using apart form your mpc?

the bassline was made with a korg ms2000 and the rest was mpc.
