BASS LINES ON MPC!!!

HEY GOT A QUICK QUESTION FOR EVERYONE WHAT DO YOU USE FOR BASE LINES FOR YOUR BEATS AND.... IF I WANTED TO PLAY LIVE BASS RIGHT INTO MY MPC2000 HOW WOULD I BE ABLE TO RECORD THE BASS AND LISTEN TO THE BEAT AT THE SAME TIME.... IS IT EVEN POSSIBLE?

fung45 is pretty much dead on.
i rarely sample my basslines into the MPC now. i dont like the quality it produces. i go through my computer, soup up the sound of my bass with plugs then if i really want to sync up then ill throw it into the mpc. However you can track your stuff from the MPC to a computer THEN play a bassline over it in your daw. that gives it more looser feel. when you throw it in the MPC it really syncs it up badass. when sampling a part such as a bass line or anything that requires time, on the 2000 and 2000XL you will need a metronome for the BPM of your song/beat. you cant sample while in main screen/ in a sequence...but now im just repeating fung45.

try this.... sample about 5-6 seconds or longer of bass whether it's sub bass or electirc bass guitar but something low like around F1 or C2 on a keyboard.... trim it up, assign it, and go to program, set the overlap to "Note Off" so the sound only rings out when you hold it down.... then go to the 16 levels and choose "Tuning"... choose your note/pad... and set the the root note or starting pad to pad 8.... hit "Do It" and all your pads should be multi-pitched in half-step intervals..... then play it out.... try to use the velocity filter to get more lows out of it.. i.e turn down the Freq. turn the Resonance up to around 10 and it will boost the lower frequencies of your bass sample....

Get a one shot bass sample and assign it to the nv slider with tuning.....Lazy mans bassline!! Turn the quantize off (or leave it on) and have some fun with it.

1)Auto-chromatic assignment-Not a bad option for some quick bass melodies.

2)Note-off pad function enabled with your bass sample assigned to the NV slider, with tuning selected.
This method seems to work best with a good saw,square,sine wave type one shot bass sample. Filter and add resonance to your liking, than play in real time to your drum beat.
Ive gotten some bad ass synth like basslines using this method.
3)Than of course pitch shifting the bass note in 16 levels, very similar to autochromatic assignment...except i dont think 16 levels allows you to go as low or high in octaves.
Still some very simple bass melodys can be made in this mode.

............Aside from sampling an entire bassline from elsewhere, and than chopping and replaying it yourself. These are the best 3 ways that i can think off using what you have internally in the MPC to make your own basslines.
Outside of using a keyboard, I would say these are your best bets.

I just either filter some samples or i sample a bass note from my keyboard thats on key with the first note that plays on my beat and 16 levels it. If its really intricate, ill just record my bass through pro tools and sample it and chop it up to fit the beat if im off.

is it possible to play bass(or any other sound)in 2kxl like u can play it on 2,5k? With 2,5k u can put the overlap of the program to mono in addition of having the single pad play with note off. This way the bass sound mutes when u release the pad and when u push another pad(in 16 levels mode)while the other pad is still being pressed, the sounds won't go over each other.

So that is possible in 2,5k. I've had 2kxl earlier, like 3 years ago, and I bought it back like a little while ago. I was thinking I did basslines on 2kxl before copping 2,5k the same way as I did em with 2,5k but now I can't get the basslines working on 2kxl. Only overlap u can change in 2kxl is the pad's overlap. When pad's overlap is note off the sounds go over each other. And when overlap is mono, the whole sample plays until end.

Is it possible what I'm trying to do on 2kxl?

man, it's a lot easier to get ya basslines goin with the XL cause of teh auto chop feature, cause it chops more extensively than what you do to chop up samples in the 2000....plus that quantize features helps a bit too...


basslines are a funny thing man.....most of the time I find them in the sample i'm using and reconstruct them....other times I'll use stock bass sounds and just program my own bassline...

grab a sample with bass in it then filter... boom bass line!

Anyone tried to do that "16 levels" technique on Battery or Kontakt ?

'Cause i've sampled some bass notes from vinyl, loaded them on to Kontakt and he automatically created the octaves. Now, i don't know if the notes sound like they would sound on an MPC or if this - "multi-pitched in half-step intervals" - happens.

I can hear all the notes, but it seems like he doesn't time-stretch them, he just changes the pitch...

(Then, before recording it's the same process like on the MPC, i just have to tune the bass with the rest of the song...)

But ... can someone try this on Kontakt and gimme some feedback?
