unwanted distortion

when i play many of my bass samples(all from different sources) they get very distored when played at a normal volume. it only happens with bass though. if i play them low enough they dont distort at all but then you cant hear the damn melody. i tried **** around with pad velocity and my mixer but no luck. any one have any ideas?

Is your output set to -6db? You can change this in the "other" mode screen. Is your bass sample filtered at all? Also, what kind of speakers are you using? Often, if your speakers can't provide enough bass response, the bass will be distorted when you turn it up loud enough to be audible.

yeah i changed it to -6db but no change. this first happened with by old bose speakers and now its happening with my nicer Spendor speakers. i guess it could be the speakers but im really not sure.

This happens to me also, muddled bass .i'd love to know how to sort it out maybe its my crap alesis monitors i duunnnooo! ... .

i didnt even realize this is happening when im working through head phones too. whether i use speakers or headphones the distortion is always there once it hits a certain volume. any one have any other suggestions?

Compresion and eqing/ filtering
Try that too shape the sound more.Try to make it tight. Sometimes I use highpass on bass. That really takes away a lot of mud.

is there any downside to setting the master level to -24db? i know the audio will be much softer but i can just change that in cool edit or something. all distortion is gone when i do this

any one know if there is any negative affects besides low volume when you set the master level to -24db?

Are you sampling right into your mpc or into software?

right into the mpc, then i take the finished product to software
