Let fun begin!

Two weeks ago I got my first MPC - a MPC 500, and I have been doing a lot of learning and fooling around.

Today I got a turntable (!). I have some LP's from the 80ties, but I think I need something a little older, 60ties and 70ties for sampling stuff.

I found a good record store near were I live, and there's also someone selling cheap vinyl close to were I live.

Next step is what to buy?

you will need a mixer my dude.

A mixer is only needed if he intends on doing cuts. If he just wants to sample a phono pre will bring his levels up. I would invest in some good monitors.

and after that...

you will need time and patience.

Keep the 80's records, You could possibly find something worth using.

Anything and everything. There's no real "guide" as to what records you should buy for sampling. Funk, Soul and Jazz has been done to death since sampling first began. Be bold and don't hold back - any genre is fair game, just be prepared to dig thru some sh*t before you find anything. Listen to every record, unless it's dollar bin or charity shop crap.....and I think it's a good idea to buy records you would enjoy listening to - it will help with the creative process.

You can start getting your geek on if you like though - look for well-known groups, related session musicians or solo work by group members. Lables like CTI, Kudu, and TK had alot of dope artists on their roster - don't be surprised if you find a dope sample and discover that someone else has already used it.

That doesn't matter - any sample is fair game. As long as you work the sample your own way, then that's cool.

Hmm, my turntable is a cheap one with built-in RIAA. I just connect it directly to the MPC. But of course, you're right! I need a mixer for connecting the MPC with my synth.

And I also miss a pair of good monitors badly - right now I use Sennheiser SP25 headphones and semi-cheap PC loudspeakers. I know, I know...

Sampling-wise I appreciate your advice! I will buy records that I enjoy listening to - so what if it's mostly 80ties music?

So far, I've bought three 2nd hand records in the past 2 days - all of the from the 80ties, and all of them new age stuff.
