Wait, you didn't answer the first part... I want to know that too--can you just leave it plugged in? I know the manuel says to unplug it, but do you really have to?

yes i think you do have to unplug it in order for the mpc to go back to normal operation. it's hard to remember tho, CUZ IVE BEEN USING A CARD READER FOR A LONG TIME, hint hint

The only thing better than a card reader is a PCMCIA adapter for the CF card. They are great because there are no extra cables needed and you can carry it around inside your laptop. It is also very speedy - much quicker than USB 1.1 readers.

I always keep the USB cable plugged into the USB connection on my computer keyboard. When I have to move files, I just plug in the other end into the MPC. So I always keep one end plugged in. Works that way.

yea id say...the card reader is the best way...unplugging is too much...lol...
the reason for unplugging is cuz the computer locks the mpc1k up thinking its just a card reader...and the only way out of that is to unplugg the mpc1k so the comp. cant read it anymore...thus the only way out of the usb option to get back to regular mpc1k work...kind of too much...lol...
i have a 6-in-1 card reader...since i have motif that using smart media card...and then the mpc1k for the compact flash card...just easier to have i guess...plus transfering things to other things is easier with one when you want to load files on another computer or something that requires more then a hard disc...and not enough to go n burn files to a cd-r...

USB has a 5V pin in the connector, if you put a switch on your
USB cable you would have an on/off button, I think. Might be fun.

My brother made a USB device last year and, for testing, he needed to unplug and plug it back in all the time. He made a cable with a switch on it like you suggest. It worked well, but was a pretty messy looking cable
The card reader is also nicer than the USB connection because you can continue to work on the MPC while you're editing samples/programs on the computer.
