After a full day with the Maschine - It looks like I'll be sticking with the MPC. The Maschine has a great work flow for a software/hardware combo, but the ~12ms latency is noticeable at times (AMD x2 4200, 2gb, WinXP SP2).

The drum samples are decent, but overwhelming to say the least (14,000+ samples). For house/electro its a dream to work with, but the groove is nowhere near comparable my MPC provides when working with hip hop.

So back to the store goes the Maschine.. I am interested in venturing into house/electro, can anyone suggest a good VST/etc? How is Battery? I have yet to use the drum rack in Ableton, anyone with experience with this?

Yes, 12 ms is noticable. Which audio interface are you using?

With the groove you mean the swing? Can you explain or let us hear what's different?

Good question!

I'm using a M-audio FW 410; and by 'groove' - I wonder how much difference a new interface would make..

Sorry, I meant reduced latency - my mistake.. new computer I guess

Had it for like 1.5 month...the chopping in the maschine is !@# ...really.
You can only choose 16 parts or transcient. No timestretch, no good slicing..no MIDI OUT!!! No good implementation in your DAW!!..No Groove templates
I sold my Maschine last weekend and got myself an MPC 1000

thought I'd never wintess a day when a software/hardware combination set out to compete with hardware such as mpc cant keep up with it

I think it is a good concept, however I feel NI rushed it too quick...I guess they was seeing $$$ rather than end customer.

I might check it out in the future but at $600 price mark I'll pass on being NI's test bunny

Im still not sure how much of a difference the interface would make. As soon as the data hits the port on the computer I would imagine latenecy is introduced. Any nerds care to verify?

I'm not a nerd  , so I can't tell you the scientific/engineering side of things, but I can tell it certainly can make a difference. Some audio interfaces can perform rock solid at 3 ms. And other audio interfaces can't even reach 10 ms. And tweaking your operating system can help too.

Things said in this thread make me laugh, in fact I registered for this forum just to say this:

An MPC is. . .you guessed it, A COMPUTER! "Fuk making beats on a computer", uh huh.

An MPC is just a specialized, relatively primitive computer, custom made for doing a specific task. Of course there is latency of some sort in an MPC, electricity is moving around, and as far as latency goes over USB, unless you have a computer that is more than 5-10 years old, not really an issue in terms of triggering samples AT ALL.

In fact a computer has HUGE advantages over an MPC in many ways in terms of what it can handle at once, and overall flexibility.

The reason most people don't seem to like using software (which the MPC is in fact using, really primitive software), is because most high-end DAWs are waaaay more complex than an MPCs software.

I understand the advantages of an MPC in many regards, but if you really want to be able to do whatever you want, knowledge of software and hardware is very important. There is so much Aura around the MPC because it is what a lot of people used before there was any very good software out there. Now most of those same people are using both in unison. If they aren't they should probably look into it as it could really save them some time.

You stumbled upon the MPC forums and searched for a thread on the Maschine and registered just to post that

So do you work for them or are you just using a new screen name

either way bro, as primitive as you claim the MPC is some of the better users of the primitive instrument make PURE F*CKING heat on it so the Maschine can suck my dilz.....

I may have exaggerated that first bit, haha, I guess I lurked for a bit and was motivated to register, and I am glad I did this is a fantastic forum. I wasn't even really referencing the Maschine, I was just interested in what people thought of it.

The MPC is an amazing bit of hardware, without question. I just get tired of people talking all this garbage on hardware vs. software when there is just no logic to it. There is no reason to bicker about one method being better than another, it is all relative, and in the end people should really fully understand what it is they are using, without glamorizing it, so that train of thought doesn't get in the way of making some good music.

I wasn't trying to sound negative towards anything, but I suppose it did come off that way. I say, don't worry about it people, try it out, if it works for you, then it works for you, it will change it will evolve, just make sure to keep an open mind or you could miss out on some interesting stuff.

Thanks for keeping me in check sir! I promise I have valuable information to contribute to this place.

he is right though about te hardware vs software.

I think they could easily make some of the features the maschine has into a piece of hardware. Most likely we will see that in the new MV. I mean 8 banks is nice, that note repeat system is not too bad either. the step sequencer method tey put in is usefull and pretty clever.

All those kinds of things could be put into a machine... but if they made a new mpc, it would need to do even more then that.... it would have to clown the 5000 without being sold as a flagship.

right on, he is right, glad he said it, and not me, i would not have been able to word it that nice, learn as many different devices as possible, software, hardware, learn it all, it will build you into a great producer
