Midi Problem - How do you request initial state of module?

Hi,

thanks for your MPC1000 FAQ. Do you know how to record the initial state of external midi devices?

In my case i wish to record the initial state of a filter (Electrix Filter Factory).

Without being able to record the initial state, if the filter's knobs aren't in the same position as they were before recording, and you will hear a quick sweep to the position where the knobs were first moved during recording.

In the filter manual it says ' a press and hold of the Bypass button will dump the present state of the controls. Midi CC#18 will request a dump of state.

i have tried pressing the Bypass switch withoput success. Do you know how to get the MPC to request the state of the filter?

I'd like to know about this as well. I think you might have to go into step edit and enter a program change message, but I'm not sure...I don't even know if the filter you have understands program change messages. It is a good, basic bit of knowledge to have for any sound module, though.

Its weird that there is no program change field on th "main" screen.

Start recording on the MPC, then do a "MIDI dump" from the Filter (I have the MoFX, and I think it's hold the bypass for 2 seconds and it'll dump). Then save the sequence.

You may not want this in the part of your seq that loops, since the filters will jump to a certain point with each loop (or you might want it). If not, either play the "Initial Sequence" once before your song starts, or create a song with that sequence first. I have sequences that setup programs of external gear (program change, etc), including empty space (time for the gear to change program), since the MPC doesn't attach this type of info to the sequence itself, and know to play it only once.

thanks, that seems to work. just don't think i was leaving enough time to press the bypass button enough - i have now made an otherwise blank 4 bar sequence in which i press the bypass button, and stuck it at the start of the song.
