It's called an AXiS-64 and they are made by a small company in the UK called C-Thru Music. They're built-to-order and usually take a few months to complete after you pay up front. You can get one for around $1,600 but I had them custom paint a black finish and also bought the optional flight case as well.

They just introduced a new entry level model that goes for $500, the AXiS-49. It has less keys, sends MIDI over USB and it's pretty stripped down. Very refreshing tool for creating music and I hope it catches on. It's especially valuable for people who don't have any classical music training.

Just got it this week so I've only had a short time to mess around with it so far but I'm really liking it. In a way it's kind of frustrating because I'm having a hard time working out my old chops. Really though I'm glad for it and that was pretty much why I bought it. I'm playing all kinds of killer riffs and chord progressions I would've never came up with on a traditional keyboard.

I'm currently in a return dispute over another item I bought from that particular retailer, so I'm hesitant to recommend them. However, a quick google search will turn up loads of Middle Atlantic distributors who are selling them.

The one sitting on my desk is the workhorse 500. I use it to make my programs and basic rhythm structures in the park or on the go, then I'll bring it back to the desk, hook it up and sequence parts on the Virus and other synths.

The other one on the Gator case is strictly for live gigs and it's mounted to a blank rack panel with heavy duty velcro.

This way I always have a fresh one for live shows and one I can take around to bash.

My Newest Set up..im very happy with it..for sure..everything i need !..do not plan on changin anything..maybe some more sythns n sound modules in the future to expand my sound bank but im good right workflows crazy now vinyls under the desk ...and man i love the 500 its a VERY capable lil machine...the midi seuquencing alone makes it better then anything in its price range!

I'll agree the Scarface merchandising is stale (and juvenile) but your attitude towards the 500 clearly shows your ignorance and
inability to critically think.

There has been countless hit records made in the past on samplers with specs far below the MPC500 (& 2000xl). There's also excellent
music made with instruments that don't even plug into the wall! But you're probably so daft and uncultured you don't even listen it.

If you didn't already see the photo of my setup above, you'll notice that I could afford to own a 5000 or 4000 without much financial
struggle. I'm not bragging here. Just trying to make a point: I choose to use the 500 because it fits my needs and there's NOTHING
else on the market that competes. Show me another compact 48 track sampler/MIDI sequencer/drum machine that's as capable as the 500
and I'll buy it. Oh, and it also has to run on battery power and it needs to be compact enough to fit two in a shoe box. Good luck!
