Doing the pics tonight, and then I'll post them with instructions

Had a 3 hour meeting in the new studio showing the nitwits what to change cause they messed up some framing.

Anywho. I'll do it tonight. BTW there is no soldering. This is all plug n play, with the exception of installing OS 1.20

I'm kickin myself.

I made instructions, but then realized that my IDE cables vary between 3 different types.

Currently the IDE cables are the biggest confusion.

I really appologize. I will try to find a cost effective source of about 100 or more so I can make one set of instructions and call it a day.

At any rate, I made them, sent them to myself via email, but it didn't come thru.

They are on the desktop of my office computer, so I'll try to get there today, or have the boss man email them to me so I can post them.

I'm in the studio today trying to install some new Waves plugins
(THEY ARE A **** TO AUTHORIZE!!! THAT'S THE ONLY THING THAT SUX ABOUT WAVES)

Just wanted to say this is a great forum.
I just recently bought a Akai MPC 2000 XL beige system of of Ebay.
The unit was described in Excellent, 100% working condition and I was psyched... and then I went back after I won the auction and sent the payment and saw where the seller said the slider switch was missing(posting was revised), I believe he meant the variation knob. I was like WTF!!!!! Anyways, it has the floppy and (deciding on if I keep the unit) and fix the one problem it has I am definitely upgrading to a compact flash. Anyways, I wanted to suggest a possible option to everyone that I intend on testing out that will ROCK everyone's world on the price if it works. I work with computers, networking firewalls and am in linux quite a bit. I recently built a system that runs off a compact flash card that has an IDE interface. It is made by Syba. The model number is SD-CF-IDE-A. You can get it at Micro Center and New Egg and it runs around $10.99. YES.... ELEVEN DOLLARS. Of course you need a bracket to mount it to. But you can get one of those at Addonics for $3.75. So if you add shipping for the bracket and pick this item up at your local Micro Center ( I know they will match New Egg's price, at least the one here in Atlanta does) then you are good to go and you could have the same functionality for $14.74 + shipping of the bracket and your time. You would have to install some risers on the bracket base and install the card on it. This is a theory for now. I have not actually tested it on a Akai MPC 2000 XL but I dont see why it wouldnt work, but it sure beats the HELL out of $60.00.
I am excited to get started with the Akai MPC 2000 XL but one thing I noticed is there seems like there are a lot of people trying to make a penny profit off acessories, etc. I mean I can't believe some the prices I have seen for SCSI drives!!!!! Outrageous!!!

Here are some links of interest:

Micro Center: Local Pickup - $11.99 - Syba SD-CF-IDE-A
http://www.microcenter.com/single_produ ... id=0255159

New Egg: Online mail order - $10.99 - Syba SD-CF-IDE-A
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... D-CF-IDE-A

Bracket at Addonics.com - $3.75
Part Number: AAIDECFBKWhttp://www.addonics.com/produ ... didecf.asp

Total Cost around $15-$16.00

As far as the IDE cable and the power connector, you can probably fabricate one of those with old parts laying around.
Oh, and one important note the Syba IDE-Compact flash board uses the standard 1.44 MB floppy power connector.
You can salvage one of them off of an old power supply. Chances are you probably aren't using it anyways. Who uses a floppy anymore on their computers!!!!

Well, Thanks again for everyone's post. There is a lot of good information here on this site. :-)

because the mount already has an IDE interface, isn't that sufficient alone? the floppy in the mpc 2000xl is connected by IDE correct?

thanks for the information!! extremely useful. it's nice to have options, if you want the kit that's available or the parts individually.

well the mpc does work with IDE compactflash readers... and the ide cf reader that I bought off ebay (before this thread was made) costed me under 2.50 US dollars INCLUDING shipping. it was 1 dollar for the reader and like 1.30 for shipping. it didn't come with a bracket to mount it in place though but I made a makeshift one.

The point is, the piece these guys are selling are guaranteed to work in the 2000xl, and they come with a solid mounting bracket. people who dont know what to shop for or dont want to fuss around with components will know these work...

Ok, Instructions:
https://rcpt.yousendit.com/692511140/3a ... 64e3d15954

A bit sloppy, I appologize, and I'll clean em up later.
One issue right now.... Ribbon cables.
I can't be paying $5 each on one cable for these as cost would go up.
If you read step 9 (Troubleshooting) you'll see what I'm talking about.
Recently discussed here, but cable ends have no tabs.

In troubleshooting a SCSI drive for SCSIFORSAMPLERS I reverted to 1.14 and now for some reason can't seem to find a compatible floppy drive or disk to get 1.2 back on so I couldn't properly label the Ribbon, but there are detailed instructions on how to get it right.

I wasn't at the old studio (pictured) this weekend cause I was overseeing construction at the new studio (PICS SOON!), otherwise I'da grabbed my SCSI CD Drive and installed 1.2 that way.

I'll get that resolved soon.

In the meantime, 5 go out today. Sounds like a lot of money right? WRONG! Not after ebay, shipping ('included' in the 60.... $10 shipping....) plus ebay and paypal fees, shipping materials, cost of manufacturing and shipping to get all my components in, blah blah blah.

Sorry if anyone was expecting them to ship friday or saturday. I got to my shipper late friday after he closed.... well, he closed early. Was closed all weekend.

I will get these 5 out today.

Thanx,

BTW, when the instructions link is broken, after 14 days, PM me directly if you need them.

More listed on Ebay

No, the floppy does not use IDE, the floppy uses a standard floppy controller. Different cable, different header inside the MPC.

how do these compact flash interfaces work then since they're a 40-pin IDE interface? these two

edit: through the 40-pin IDE header on the MPC's motherboard

so i've read the instructions, flipped the cable every possible way, tried each cable position with 3 different CF cards and still no luck. my IDE cable isn't marked at all, bit i think i know which position is right. the MPC acts strangely different to each position and each CF card, but i've never gotten it to work. it always just says "No Floppy Device!!" everytime i try.

i've tried it on a SanDisk 256mb card, a Canon 32mb card, and the Akai Pro 128mb card, no luck with any. im assuming i just need to try a dozen more cards, but the problem with that is that even if i find a card that works, how do i know that the IDE cable is in the right position?

im sure after a bunch of attempts i could get it to work, you have a proven brand and size of CF card that definitely works? other wise im outta ideas...

let me know if you got any advice so far...

are you using the 2000XL ? and if so... did you update to OS 1.20 ? because that is exactly what happens when you are using 1.14 with the IDE/ATAPI card readers.
