ehhh..im tryin not to become the first dissapointed customer, but i cant see this happening. i just ran thru and double checked everything, i dont see how 4 different cards wont work. i dunno maybe i should just keep trying more...

is there anyway to tell if the drive is installed properly without using a CF card?

you should see the card reader in the load options.

it should say ATAPI. you know the spot where you push open window and choose the drive?

I dont know what to tell you.

if you have a cf drive in the computer... maybe see if they work in the computer.

I have two 1GB cards (one sandisk, one kingston) and the kingston works on the computer... the sandisk wont. the light on the reader doesn't even light up when i insert it.... but both work on my mpc.

alright so for a second i felt like an idiot, but now its frustrating again.

so i forgot about the Red LED that will lgith up when its on, but for some reason it just turned on just now, and it had never turned on before this.

but what happens is that, the LED will only seem to light up on certain IDE cable positions. and whenever the LED lights up, the MPC doesnt get past the main screen. like it just turns on but is completely blank and all the lights are on.

so then i switch the cable around, and the MPC will start up fine, but the RED LED on the cf reader wont light up.

i guess i've gotten a little further, but i cant find a combo that completely works yet.

Thanks mr_debauch.....

I believe you pretty much validated what I thought to be the case.
Yes I saw on e-bay where you could get the IDE to compact flash board without the mounting bracket piece for just $1 but didnt save the link. It popped up as one of those links on E-bay of items that you might like... LOL !!!!!!

You mentioned you got it working and I haven't even received my Akai MPC 2000XL yet to give it a shot for the Syba adapter that I have. HOWEVER, with all the research I have done, I imagine that once I upgrade to 1.20 I shouldn't have any problem. I much rather save my money and come out cheaper that paying $60.00 + for a kit. Someone is making a lot of profit on that ;-) . However, I understand that knowing that it works and not dealing with the hassle is certainly worth paying extra for some people. However, I (like a lot of others on this site) are hackers at heart and if we can't do it ourselves and get some satisifaction of keeping some extra change in our pockets then we dont feel like we have put ourselves up to the challenge.

Thanks again for your insight... I'll find out real soon if the Syba adapter works. However, I dont think you can beat $1.00 any day of the week. Do you have the exact link where you can buy that to share here.

Thanks so much....

out of respect I wouldn't post any links to other products in this man's thread...

the one I got, i took the gamble on it. I had no way of knowing beforehand that it would work... but trial and error is what it's about.

My bad....
I didn't realize that this forum was promoting one particular product or solution.
I thought it was a site for Akai MPC enthusiasts.
My mistake.

I thought though earlier in the thread I saw several other links to compact flash readers by Addonics, etc and other manufacturers. That's probably why I didnt think anything about it trying to offer suggestions. There definitely was links to several different solutions.
Please accept my apologies if I stepped on anyone's toes. I am a newbie at this site as well as working with the MPC just wanting to get on board.

to calirfy your last post about my situation...are you sayin that the red LED doesnt necesarily have to light up in order for the reader to work?

the LED on the reader on the mpc (in my experience) lights up when something is being written to it or something is loading from it... however on the computer it seems to light up when a card is in it.

godd damn this is so confusing. i dont get it, sometimes it lights up with no card, sometimes no light at all. sometimes XL doesnt go all the way on, sometimes it does.

but they never work together, if the reader powers on, the XL doesnt, it the XL powers on, the reader wont.

I appologize for the confusion. Most people aren't having so much trouble, but a few are.

First, the MPC isn't gonna show this right without a compatible card inserted.

Must have OS1.20 installed (SOMETIMES THE OS INSTALL IS CORRUPTED, SO EVEN IF IT LOOKS LIKE IT'S FINE, YOU MAY NEED TO RE-INSTALL, I HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN PERSONALLY)

The card must be in when you turn on the machine.

The red LED will light when accessing the card.

The compatibility guidelines for CF cards is listed on the auction and I think in the first post of this thread.

Jamestown? Can you tell what card you're using?

I'm a bit surprised the AKAI card doesn't work, but it's a 128 so I assume it's from a newer MPC, as the MCD shipped with a 32 correct? So the format of that card may be incompatible.

Yes, I have had a couple people need to try a bunch of different cards. That is probably your issue here.

I'd start by re-installing the OS

I use Microcenter 1GB cards, but those were bought a couple years ago and I think they only have 2GB cards now. Might still work tho. They are $10

I recommend borrowing as many cards as you can find to troubleshoot, then buy from those specs, but again, the specs are listed, so a card in those specs should work fine.

I am working on getting 1GB cards to include in the auctions, but it will increase the price. I suppose I can sell them with/without.

This will eliminate a lot of confusion.

I found a ishtload of 64 MB Sandisk CF cards (the label is Sandisk Shoot and Store) on clearance. Bought em alll and they work perfectly. Im looking for a 1Gb now, but cant find any where Im located (can only find 1 gb cf extreme 3 cards). If anyone is interested in 64 mb, Ill swap a few of em for a 1gigger....They are all tested and formatted for the xl. I can sell a few too, I have more than 10 of em right now.

Yo, I found a 1gb card that works - Delkin Devices DDCFFLS2-1GB.

Namotu, I had the same issues. Now when I got it working, the led of the reader is lit up ALL THE TIME when mp's power is on. Whether the card was inserted or not.

When I put in a card that's incompatible, mp won't recognize Atapi. It says "no floppy device". It says the same thing when I power up the mp without a memory card. Atapi as a device is ONLY used when u have a correct card.

I can't remember how my ribbon was put there. If you don't get it working, I guess I gotta open the mp and take a pic for you, if it helps.

The biggest minus in this reader is it's issues with most of the cards. I've tried 8 different cards and two of 'em worked. That akai card(128mb) doesn't work, tried that.

I can tell you almost for sure, that the problem lies in the installation of the ribbon. I had all the similar problems. Sometimes the led of the reader was lit all the time and mp's OS wouldn't load, sometimes OS loaded but reader's led wasn't lit up. Sometimes every led of the mp was lit up and OS wouldn't load.

Are you sure that you have pushed the head of the ribbon FIRMLY to the bottom in the mp's end? When u click the holders that click the ribbon's head to it's place, it isn't inserted firmly yet. U gotta push it to the bottom with power. But don't break the mp's circuit board!

ahhh thank the lord i finally got this to work...damn finally, thanks for all the help. my red light never goes on though, i kinda liked it though.

anways, now its easy to test cards so i found the ones that work and the ones that dont.
