not really making any progress

I guess I'm not musically inclined or something, but I've had my MPC500 for a year or so and I have made absolutely no progress beat wise. I can never find good samples or loops and I can never find drums to fit a sample.

But I learn by example, not really by experimenting.

So I was wondering if someone has a video of them selecting a sample and what to, and what not to look for when selecting a sample.

Any help would be great, I suck really bad and I just want to get better.

I have My macbook output going into my mpc record in, I Go to the Itunes radio section, and start browsing some Jazz Radio stations from around the world, As I here something I like, I jus hit record on the Mpc, You can allways expand your drum sounds libiary, Theres plenty of nice Drum sounds for sale on ebay,

You can allways add effects to Your Drums, to get em to match,

Jus Jam and have fun Pal, You will then reap the benifits, Dont worry bout what everyone else does, Jus do what sounds good to You

its all in your ear..if u hear a sound,drum,synth,cymbal,etc that you like..just save it...after you have 5 or 6 or so samples that u absolutely love..then make a pattern out of drums and just play around with the samples..

maybe this isnt for you,but it seems like your determined,in wich it would be for you...

so just keep at it...

best thing is critisizm..good or bad...if you post a beat and get critisized for it,it should only make you try harder..


so everyonce in a while i'll throw a beat up and people will nit-pick it to death..and i just take the nit-picking points and work on them...

maybe you need to learn about music more if you think you aren't "musically inclined" because everyone is. just listen to all types of music and eventually you'll have an idea in your head of what you want to sound like.

if you aren't interested in being a producer at all, sell your mpc. but you should be able to tell if its something you want to do. it seems like you want to be a producer you just don't know how.

just listen to a lot of music, and then listen to music that uses samples and think about what they had to do to find them. what they probably could have sounded like originally.
download audacity or something and see how you can put effects on samples to turn them into any sound you want...

most of the drive for me comes from hearing music and wanting to be able to make music for myself.

I just need to sit down and mess around for hours and hours.

My inspiration is just to make beats that I like, beats that feeling.

Maybe I should lay off sampling for a bit and work on drums and my synth.

just quit.. haha na just joking.... there mus have been a producer you like that made you want to start making beats.. like for me, beat wise, i started listenign to Premiere to Alchemist to Jdilla and than to 9th wonder. when i herd 9th wonder for the first time, i felt i HAD to start making beats. in the first year i really wasent close at all. but know i have soulful beats that i am pretty satisfied with.. www.myspace.com/intpdr you have to study producers to be ill and advance. im still advancing. you should re make beats of your favorite producers, buy more records, listen to more hiphop and enjoy it. i hate people that listen to there own music only. i think that destroys your creativity.

I definitely love 9th wonder, everything that he does is fantastic to me.
What made me want to start making beats was Boondock, then Dilla drove me more and now Black Milk and 9th make me want to start producing even more.
Which is probably why I posted this.

I'm going to go buy some more wax soon, I think that's one of my problems too, I have a lot of 80's breaking music, not that many soulful tracks.

DO UR HOMEWORK !!! Listen to all genres of music, not jus the soul, jazz, etc.. & wut u hear in ur everyday hip-hop.
