Nice ear, but, nah its not the steve miller, its from some moog record, It reminded me a lot of that steve miller joint though which is why I chose it... I didn't think anybody would pick up on that, its so low in the mix.

Next beat i post will have an outro, Damn, y'all are SUPER critical. I was expectin' complaints about ish like, the sample was wack, the beat was wack, U suck, I didn't like it, etc., but the kick is clipping??? Do u mean its too loud like over-modulation or some s*hit??

You're not supposed to be responding to comments just yet, its an anonymous poll.

Sit back, relax and keep an eye on the feedback and speculation...

Or did I miss something?

I don't think dude would win any votes by removing anonymity, he's only hurting his chances IMO so it's not a big deal, plus yeah, cat was out of the bag.

But I don't think the kick would sound that bad if you layered it with a boomy one under it, one with more low end. I don't even think it sounded that bad to begin with, like I said it was a cool beat.

I listened for 2 days...

Piranha is dope. I was feeling the drums. You can tell that NYM knows his MPC in and out... He has great touch on this drums. If I would of just listened to this without knowing I was on the MPC-Forums I would of never thought this was all done on the MPC. But to me it dont matter how technical somebody can get on the MPC, its about how dope the beat is... End of story.

My vote went to Bang.
I think that sample is crazy... The adlibs is stupid though.
Nice sample, nice bassline very raw, drums hit HARD and that synth that kicks in after the first 8 bars is dope.

pretty much what i thought too.

its pretty obvious nym is a talented dude, and has 'produced' the better track... but when it comes down to it, id rather listen to 'bang' than to 'pirana'. pirana is something i can appreciate if i put on my headphones and study closely.... bang is jsut head nod music and that to me always beats technical greatness/intricate drums or whatever.

good battle though...

I went with bang on this one, it's definitely dilla-esque. With all the post dilla influenced producers, fly-lo, jneiro jarel, etc.,this particular sound is kind of running it's course. Up against anything else with even an inkling of hip-hop in it I might not have picked it. While I'm a huge Dilla-head, I still believe cats need to ease up a little. Regardless, as the title says it definitely bangs.

But that Piranha beat was just awful, it reminded of something yanni might do. Just so we're clear it's not bad in the context of a yanni song, it's actually rather good for that particular arena. With that said when I think beat battle, I think hip-hop, street, smack a dude in the face type shit. Piranha is too soft for this type of affair. I imagine some swarthy, euro-trash type with a pony tail and offensive body odor diggin this. Although it was definitely "produced" well, what with all the subtleties in the drums. But it just completely lacked soul, it was very soft, not to be confused with mellow or chill, SOFT

To sum things up, While bang wasn't the most original beat in terms of style, it certainly rocked more than piranha. Bang was like a good hamburger, not exactly original and has been done to death, but sometimes if its cooked well with even the most basic of toppings its really delicious. Piranha was like asian-cambodian-russian fusion; exotic; definitely, different; absolutely. But with all the focus on technical wizardry and combining weird ingredients, sight was lost on making a good meal. My two cents

Hope that makes some sense

I really think you should get out more if you think Piranha was in any way exotic!

I voted for it simply because it was better produced and more crafted than Bang. The final sheen on Bang sounded like classic Izotope Ozone mastering, which as someone else has eluded to sounds awful when cranked up loud. I've dropped plenty of Ozone mastered tracks in my sets and they just distort the **** out of any system! Apologies if my analysis is incorrect in any way...

At the end of the day this wasn't a battle over sound quality though, so what swung my vote in the end was a well thought out ending from Nym countered by a lazy 'stop button' ending by Murphy. When shit is this close sometimes you have to be picky!

Looks like Murphy has carried the vote anyway so well done fella. :)

My vote goes to Nym, by a hair. I love the layered tamb on the snare, and I get mezmerized by complex drums. most people are scared of tambourines, for good reason. To use one with taste is a challenge. That turnaround made me jealous. If a real drummer did that live, I would have cheered. Subtle but clever and unexpected.

Piranha:
There were two turnoffs here, though. One, the guitar mix sounded muddy. Understandable because the MPC 1000's mixer and effects STANK (and not in a good way) though my dude can no doubt use the MPC to it's full capabilities like no other.
Two, I'm a fan of the LOW bassline. That bassline, while flawlessly delivered, was a little midrange-y for my personal taste.

Bang:
Didn't care for the ad-libs, but not a big turn-off. Still, I liked everything about this track (almost). Especially LOVED (suck it) the way the drums clipped. Just sounds raw and hard. Just Blaze's drums clip on purpose sometimes, too. That's a taste thing, also. Some people freak out about it. Whatever. Why the loss of my vote? Them drums made me seasick. There's a thin line for me on disjointed drums. When it works, it's sick. I couldn't dig it here, though. Don't get me wrong, Cap, Your instrumentation made me wanna make a beat right then. Very nice, if simple or not. No-go on the drums, vote goes to Piranha.
As soon as I got done listening I thought, send that beat over to Nym so he can do the drums. THEN I'd have to slap myself.

Just a quick reminder...

The poll will be closing within 24 hours from now (Monday 8th June 2009) at which point the winner will be declared.

If you haven't already, there is still time to vote...

i'm glad somebody around here has got enough sense to pick up on stuff like this
you people lauding "Bang" as a work of art are just crazy
if it was DJ Shadow track it'd be called "out of tune and off time"
i'm not hating just to be hating, either
that kick is all ugly and clipped off, throw that on a wav editor and i'd bet money you can see it flat topping even through the rest of the mix
and the last 35 seconds of drums are a completely embarrassing off time trainwreck of a mistake.

Ben.H wrote:For me the piranha beat totally fell flat in the engineering/production department, i feel like the drums had a crappy reverb sound and i don't like that multisampled guitar sound, especially when you here it looping on long notes. It was a really cool composition and deserved to have a more live and acoustic sound, i think the sounds used were a little flat feeling and i lost interest.

The bang beat was just really polished and had a great vibe and sound that tied it all together. It was interesting and original and kept my attention.

if you think you're a producer or something, step your critical listening game up
otherwise, you need to pack it in, homeboy
there isn't anything polished about clipping kicks and off time drums
drop that str8fyre club banger on a real dance floor and watch a whole room wtf when they suddenly can't find the beat to move to
or go ask a dope rapper whether he likes to spit over off-time drums

Blow d*ck, f*ggot!!!! non-descript, d*ck in-the-booty muthaf*cka...
