So... where do YOU usually get your sounds from?

Had my MPC500 for maybe a week now and I just got my RAM upgrade and a 2 GIG CF card today.

I'm going to start making my own programs with samples finally and begin diving into making some instrumentals. I'm just curious to see where other MPC users get their sounds from. And when I say sounds I mean anything from kicks and snares to full blown samples from other audio tracks.

Myself, I gathered a few folders worth of simple kicks, snares, high hats, etc. through downloads here and there. I also have some loops I got when I bought Pro Tools. Some are actually not bad.

So yea... type whateva, just wanna see where else I can look for some material to put into my first instrumental. Hopefully we give each other some ideas.

Yea everyone talks of vinyl... I don't see the big deal lol >_< I don't have a turntable and each vinyl cost so much I bet they sound a bit better though.

the whole thing behind vinyl is getting what the next man dont have..so digging through as many records as posible to find that one sample,break,loop,etc...is a vital part in originality...think of it this way..if u use what everyone else is using,you'll probably sound like them.

get a microphone and record stuff with it!



also... internet radio stations, movies, tapes, CD's from the dollar store, records obviously...... everything that music was put on will be a good place to check. some people use youtube but it is pretty much agreed around here that the sound is crap and not even worth using (but it is a great place to audition music before copping a hard copy)

Being creative with any sound you may have is the most important thing. A lot of people who sample from vinyl exclusively are doing nothing original or creative, so don't feel you need to dig to be part of the game. Being able to make your samples sit in a mix and sound like they came off vinyl is way more impressive than simply sampling a record... assuming what you're doing has a vibe in the first place of course.

Mostly vinyl.
Every kind of drumbreak or one shot I like for drums.
For bass I sample phrases, loops, one shots.
Other instruments from phrases to note's, one shots chords etc. from random vinyl.
I have a few library sounds that came with the mpc and musci production magazines.
Anything that's availible that I like. And vinyl doesn't have to be that expensive. Unless ur diggin for a classic Al Green that has been sampled a billion times.

Since I don't have access to my turntables or vinyl anymore, I have to download music to sample.

i sample 90% vinyl.

havent gone digging in a long time but i have a lot of wax and i always find shit on it.

the other 10% is CD's, tapes, real instruments ( ) and bodily sounds lol

I sample anything except shitty beat packs downloaded off the Internet or purchased at Guitar Center -- though I am partial to vinyl.

I sample vinyl as much as cds, but cds can be too clean than the vinyl version so its 60% vinyl for me and 40% cd and/or dvd. Sometimes that dope sample on the LP is all scratched up and damage to take, so I get it on cd to hear whats missing.

So... I keep reading around here that a lot of people seem to hate the drum samples and stuff that you can download from various sites. Do they sound bad or something... or is it that people rather go sample a track to get that one kick or snare?

The way I'm lookin at it now, I rather not sample that one kick or snare from a track because it has been mixed already. There's also sometimes other sounds layered on it so it's not just the drum sound, ya know? But I'm curious to hear what others think on the whole thing.

There's a lot of purists who will only sample from vinyl, but don't limit yourself in the slightest. I have packs that have some of the best kicks and snares I have ever heard, but you've generally got to pay more than $10 dollars to get them... or know where to download them.

I forgot to mention my music magazine subscriptions (Computer Music, Future Music & Music Tech) that come with sample DVD's and free computer/Mac programs.

I've got around 100 copies of Future Music so I know what you're saying. I got demo of the month one time too which was a highlight!
