what a crappy morning as a mpc owner

so today i wake up with the inspiration to make a beat which i havent gotten in a long time. i just been starting to get the motivation to make music again and so on... i own a mpc 2000 and 2000xl. i set up the 2000. go to record sample screen, freezes in that screen. i figure whatever, let me reboot and try again. now i get 'disk read error' when i try to start the machine. dead floppy drive - anyone? depressing as **** for about 5 minutes (still mad though)

so i'm like, ok I have another mpc, let me plug this baby in. XL loads up and looks beautiful on the screen, asked myself why i havent turned it on in a long time. anywho, go to load sample screen... every time i try to use the datawheel, the numbers (values?) of whatever can be scrolled just decreases. i spin the wheel to the right or left, it just decreases. i have never heard of this problem occuring before, but i could be blind... anyone have any idea of what this may be? thanks in advance

disk read error is usually bad drive or bad floppy disk. I would put the OS onto a brand new floppy and see if you can boot up.

on your 2000xl, it could be a bad encoder.

open it up dust it and make sure all the connectors are in! happened with my old 2000xl... still thumping my speakers to this day just because of a little 10 min maint to the old beat bucket!

2kxl my data wheel is doing that too. whenever it freaks out like that i press shift load and it seems to stop doing it for a little while. sometimes it goes all over the place like 0 to 999. more and more i feel like my data wheel becoming a bit loose and most likely ill need to replace it. about a year ago i opened the front panel and dusted everything off. it helped alot. does your make any noise when you scroll? well IMO i think you should open the top and dust the front off. helped for me.

use shift and note slider that will do that same as the data wheel.

open that baby up and spray it out with air probably dusty in there, believe it or not they need a cleaning inside too. if your going to using you have to know how it works inside too. if you can work on a computer you can work on an MPC trust me, i have basic knowledge on computers and i was trippin at first to open it up but it's way simpler then it looks. spray it out once in a while it will work better for you and last longer.

thank you all for the replies.. I did open the machine (not going to lie, had them unscrewed but covered for maybe a year - yikes) and blew by the black cloth-like material over the data rotari or whatever its called and now it seems to be working. i appreciate all the replies again. it's time to be a better owner and treat it as if it's myself or even better. the 2000 i'm just convinced its a dead drive (will check connections), although i will try transfering the startup os to another floppy and try that. once again, thanks again everybody.
