MPC4K Hard Drive Cables???

Hi Guys

I'm trying to install a New Hard drive into my MPC4K(It came without one fitted),I've got myself a western Digital 120gb IDE Drive, I have already opened the case on the MPC to see whats goes where etc,and noticed that due to the lack of drive fitted prior to buying,there are also no peripheral cables to connect the Drive to its required ports,I've fitted new hard drives on computers,so the MPC should be a breeze,however I'm trying to find some info on the correct cables needed(Power/Data cables)are they standard off the shelf computer cables or specific cables to the MPC?Just wondered if any can shed some light for me.

Also wondered if its possible to perhaps fit one of the smaller 2.5" Laptop type drives into the MPC with an adaptor or gender changer or something,I'm thinking more for the noise aspect as they seem to be quieter overall,although at the moment I'm trying to install the 3.5" IDE.so any info on the cables needed would be greatly appreciatted

I can't remember about the power cable, but as far as the data cable is concerned, it's a standard IDE cable. To make the MPC less noisy, a 2,5" drive is beneficial, but be aware that the machine is very picky about that. I've somewhere posted in this forum which 2,5" hd definately works. It's a Western Digital drive.

There should also be a link to the 4000 Service Manual somewhere in the forum. Download and follow the description. Also, make sure to unplug the main cord and DON'T TOUCH THE PSU BOARD!!!

Yes I've repaired Musical equipment and installed Hard drives before,so am aware of statics and isolating the Power Supply whilst working inside things,wouldn't dream of having the Power supply connected whilst doing such activities I'm no Engineer,but would still exercise a little common sense whilst working with electrical components.

I'm fitting a standard 3.5" drive for the time being,but would like to fit a laptop type drive in the future so thanks for the tip,I read somewhere about upgrading the Internal Fan,is the standard fitted one sufficient to keep the MPC cool with a hardrive fitted??Has anyone experienced heat dissipation/Overheating problems with the standard model.I did look at a USB External large Drive after thinking about this?what is the maximum size drive the MPC can utilise externally?

If I go down the External route,will need a drive around 500gb or so as it will be used for several other instruments too,I don't want to have several drive for single devices due to the MPC not being able to recognise large drives,so would rather have an internal MPC drive if this is the case,at the moment I've been using a USB Pen drive for storage,but having to keep transfering data over to the PC for safe keeping as the pendrive is only a mere 16mb,and I work with a lot of sample data so this is easily eaten up.Hence why I need an internal drive,I presume that with a hard drive fitted I can drag and drop samples to and from the Computer via a USB cable into the MPC?

Just wondered about the Power supply connector??is it a standard Hard drive power cable(4 pin on the HD) or does it have a specific terminal/Connector on the MPC side of things.

Will try to find and check out the Service manual.

Its the P8/P7 Connector,I have trawled through plenty of computer sites for the Power cables but I'm drawing a blank on this one,simply because the P7/P8 terminals on the Akai seem to be a specific socket rather than a universal power connector/conversion.the 4 pin on the IDE Drive end is a standard terminal but there seem to be no cables availible which have the connector which will fit the Akai PCB board?or am I looking for the wrong cable?

if I can find the actual socket for the Akai I can simply use a standard plug cable and fit the connector to the Akai terminal(Does anyone have the info for the Pins and which pin is which)

is the same cable for the MPC4000 Hard drive?

don't presume anything. the hd cable for the mpc looks like no other i have seen.


It has a built in fuse/capacitor in-line with the power cables
