Is it really all in the timing?

hey I read most of the guide on the Akai MPC 500, but I must have missed how to record without the PERFECT timing. I just started playing aroudn with my MPC after a couple of months and I need to know how to trim my beats right on the MPC 500 (or an easier way to allow my beats to be almost perfect timing).

Either practice hitting the pads in time, or turn on the quantize function.

Oh my god... Come on! I read the damn manual I just started doing thsi type of thing again and I don't even remember what it's called! Can you be a little more helpful... PLEASE I can't find answers anywhere!

I'm pretty sure you're not talking about turning timing correct off for some of your tracks.

I think you're talking about how you chop your samples up.

Do you just mean break your samples up into quarters?

What?! Really? That's disappointing... can you ever get you're beats perfect if it's just all in the timing?

Music is all about timing. Perfect beats doesn't fall off trees you know. Learn it or smell my finger.

1st off:

Theres no such thing as perfect. Just when you get the beat perfect the first person you let hear it says it sucks. Just make music that you like and learn the machine.

2nd: Read the manual. You would need to turn off T.C. but in all honesty most cats NEED the quantize on. All these Dilla clones are lame as hell. Just because you turn quantize off it wont make your beats sound "natural". That only happens when you have an sense of timing and good control. Otherwise it just sounds off beat and generally bad.

Iight thanks man I have some free time today so I might get at that manual, but I'm not to sure what the T.C and quantize are. I'm guessing something to do with timing or something.

So I read the part in the manual about the Time Correction and I still don't fully understand it because whn I record things in 1/6, 1/8, 1/16 or just OFF it all sounds the same to me.

After like 10 tries trying to get 3 snares in one recording, I added bass and it went like this; BASS, SNARE + BASS, BASS, SNARE + BASS, SNARE. So then when you listen to it there's to BASS, SNAREs in a row!

Soo yeah, still confused.
