COMPATIBLE CF DRIVE http://sears.shop.com/45277486-p.xhtml
(not hot- swappable) This one works it IS the same drive as the Addonics just without the name addonics printed on it. As of today; 2/21/2010 it is only $33 + shipping. I actually bought this same model from psim.com which they call PSI Model: IIC-B (black) ( great service by the way) but I payed $84 total for it there! I found this same but cheaper drive while looking for local (cheap) compact flash cards that would work in my new reader (which I found here http://www.staples.com/SanDisk-2GB-Ultra-II-CompactFlash-(CF)-Card/product_574212?cmArea=SEARCH , these work great and the best part is you can pick it up quick because you most likely have a Staples close by. They ARE 2gb but the mpc treats it as a 1gb card ( I did try and partition the cards into 2, 1gb partitions with my Mac, but was unsuccessful so far) I bought it, then went to my car and tried it out right there to save time. I have an outlet in my van, I was so stoked when I saw the ATAPI aproving message on the screen, then I went back in and bought another one. I still have to return my 4gb Lexar Platinum ll. The Lexar made my screen unreadable even though the mp still read ATAPI.) I fried my 1 gb Sandisk in the process of installing the cf reader! I would advise you to be careful when shutting the mpc off and then on with the card in the drive as this can easily happen as you lose track of the card while you keep trying to figure out if everything is connected right. Just connect it once, trust that the reader IS working, and THEN try the card, i.e. turn the mpc OFF, then insert the cf card into the drive, and THEN turn on the mpc.

Here is the link to the compatible cf card reader. I had to screw two holes into the bottom of the drive to be able to mount it, sounds tricky but it's simple when you open up the mp and see how you can mount the drive. You'll also need an IDE flat ribbon cable (make sure it has all 40 holes OPEN on either side ( female on both ends) I first purchased one that had 39 holes on either side and was told it is the "standard" IDE cable, so it was a waist of $ and time, I got the right one from a local computer repair shop. Like it has been said before, you can just use the same power cable from your floppy drive for the cf reader as it will reach with this sized model. Set the cf drive to master, it will be like this when you buy it just don't change it. and obviously you MUST update your OS to ver. 1.20 with a FLOPPY, BEFORE you put the cf reader in, just mentioning this incase you didn't know. So spread the love and share these links with your pals, alright.

i am trying to get an addonics reader working - is i critical to bump the os on the mpc to 1.20 before installing - will it usually not find the card at version 1.14 ?

I got an external SCSI CD drive that the drive is broken in and would love to pull out the CD drive and replace with a cheap CF drive. Would I be able to do that similar to what is explained here so Iwould be able to read and write to the cards in the same way if it was an internal CF?

Yo!
This post had all the information I needed to know to swap out my old floppy drive and replace it with a good ol card reader. If it wasn't for this post, I would have probably spent $167 on a card reader from mpcstuff. com (Trust me I was very close). I haven't received my card reader yet, but I'm excited for when it comes. This post was extremely helpful. I can't thank you guys enough :)
