Need an MPC ASAP

what about old fashioned craigslist ?

on ebay make sure to use paypal, if shit arrives not as described you can always file a claim with them and get your money back.

Why do people talk down on the 500? That seems perfect for me. I sample in my audio editor and chop with X-Razor, then assign to pads with MPC Pad 187. Sequence, make a wav which will become an mp3. Why do people treat the MP 500 like a leper? Did Akai drop the ball?

While its easy just to have a pop at Akai - I'd have to say that I'd currently place mpc 500 at the lowest of my favourite ones (have had an mpc 1000,500 and 2500).

The obvious issue I saw - and you will see if you use one - is that the display makes things difficult to follow. It can fit 2 rows of characters, so there's no queston of editing (or even viewing) waveforms.

You'll also note that sound output is considerably lower on the mpc 500 - check posts on the forum.

There is currently no JJOS for the 500. This does make a difference as many of those (with more mpc experience than I) can tell you. Im not sure there are plans to release JJOS for the unit.

What Akai have done is release an extremely portable machine. But at the moment I'd say that too much functionality is lost to make it worthwhile.

I'm glad I actually started with an mpc 1000 then tried to go portable with an mpc 500. Had I started with a 500 I reckon I would have gone back to using Ableton Live.

But we're not spending your money here. If triggering off your pre-edited samples is what you want - then maybe the mpc 500 is perfect for you. If you have a CF card then you could put some WAV samples 44k on them and maybe a music store will let you try them out on a unit.

There are many companies that provide warranties for secondhand equipment. Like Squaretrade for instance, I have no personal experience with them, but they tout a 5-day turnaround on claims...

I'm just going to buy Maschine with the Academic discount and get an MPC 500 for when I'm OT.

no, buy two of 'em. That way you can still use one when the hard drive is full up on the other one....

But I can get a lot more for the money. If I needed an MPC as my workhorse I'd get a 2500, but I only nead a 500 so I can make beats on the go or to tap out a beat skeleton Maschine can turn into a body of work

After you recorded everything to the "piano roll", how can you change the swing after that?

You can't do that. Just shift the notes inside piano roll untill you feel you got it.
