anything besides 4/4

So obviously hip hop and most popular music is in 4/4 time signature, but some people are starting to look beyond this boundary. Anyone make any, or know of any beats that are in anything besides 4/4?

Dave Brubeck was very well knows for his music that always used different and complex time signitures..through out his career he experimented with many different types.
For example his most famous piece was in 5/4 time

hmmmm Im not very familar counting time signatures but to me it sounds more like 9/8

hey flower power has an "unusual" time sig to 6/4

Wasn't there a thread a few weeks ago about that topic. I remember someone said something about Frank Zappas crazy time signatures. And Genesis had some unusual stuff too.

The more complex the pattern, the harder it is to understand the music. That's why if people don't understand or can't comprehend your song, they call it shit.

You should actually listen to other music with different time sigs, to draw ideas from ya know?

And, technically Jazz pieces are beats. They have drums, and different time sigs. Listen to those.

It's kinda weird, I feel like we have 4/4 embedded in our brains. Trying to understand anything besides 4/4 feels like writing with my left hand.

I've done a few beats in 3/4, but i never felt right spittin on em. This was a few years ago though, and i think i could pull it off now. Not just pull it off, but make it actually hot.

If we're talking 5/4 then it's all about the theme from Halloween. I have fond memories of trying to play March of the Pigs by NIN in Rock Band, too, that didn't work out too well since it switches sigs on you.

i have a hard time figuring out the sig for some jazz, classical, or movie scores sometimes.

i'm sure most ppl are down with removing every note before the snare from a sample with triplet timing to create a 4/4 rhythm?

i do this so much it's not funny, this is one of my favorite methods of sequencing samples!
then swapping notes for ones that work better, rinse repeat..

you might be able to just go 4/4 over a 3/4 beat tho, well depends on the actual rhythm of those drums.. but many times, 5/4, 3/4, 7/4 etc etc goes pretty well with 4/4.. can create some really nice grooves that way..

and 5/4 bass to a 4/4 drumbeat or vice versa can be awesome.. creates a different groove each time it loops (well 5 variations because of the 5/4) .. but, can be hard to get it good, because not only must it sound good the first time it loops, but the next 4 times will depend on where you have placed those hits.. so it can end up sounding shit, but is sweet when you pull it off

Jay-Z, The Black Album "My 1st Song" is in 6/8
Hip-hop is mostly 4/4 or 6/8

and at least for me, I make beats for MCs and if you make an 11/16 or 7/4 beat, no one will want to spit over that.

yea, you're probably right, what we really want track is 6/8 or 9/8, or something like that. flower power is definitely 3/4 and has a rap. the rap definitely had a different feel because of the time sig.
