I just bought a MPC 60 from a hip hop legend

Hey what's up everyone!!

I just came across your site and I thought I'd give a shout out. On Monday I was lucky enough to purchase Bill Laswell's MPC 60 - he originally wanted $600 but when I got there to test it out it turned out that the floppy drive wasn't reading or writing - only the LED would come on in it. His lead engineer got him on the phone and Bill dropped the price down to $450 since it looks like I have to buy a new drive. So, do you think $450 was a good deal even though I need to buy the drive? Do you know a good place to buy the replacement drive? I wonder if it only needs a cleaning, hmmm

Another cool thing is that apparently Grandmixer DST shares studio space in Laswell's studio. When I got there DST stepped out but his jacket and cellphone were still there - you know DST was rocking this MPC at various points. I feel so privileged to have this unit passed down to me by hip hop royalty - I guess this in itself was worth the dough - the vibe factor on this machine is intense.

BTW I began banging beats since the mid 80s and never got one of these units. I was a Korg DSS1, EPS 16+, DJ70 producer as soon as software came up to speed in 1996 I then changed completely over in that direction - now I'm going back to hardware again, hence the MPC 60.

I'm really loving the vibe of the MPC community. Shouts out to all the B-boys & B-girls in da house!

Sometimes I think I should just get the SCSI option instead since I have multiple zip drives lying around but now I see the SCSI is discontinued I wish I could just go into Staples and buy a floppy drive cleaner just to do a quick test using that method to test the floppy drive but of course this old skool technology isn't sold in their stores anymore. My rackmount EPS 16+ has a DS/DD drive in it I wonder if that would work?

I can't believe that I'm going back to hardware now but the one thing that I've been realizing is that music making needs to be physical and after watching so many MPC videos on youTube I came to the conclusion that the MPC will give me that feel - not to mention that 12 bit punch and funky swing that we all want in our beats. I must say that the vibe factor on this machine is intense!! built like a tank, no other machine that I've owned feels this way. I feel like now I have my own star trek command deck. I can't wait to run this sucker through my tube amps, space echoes and spring reverbs

Laswell is one of my all-time top influences. That guy has been all over the place in production. About the floppy drive, did you get the owner's manual and check it with that? Because I just got an MPC-3000 and took it to my tech to check it, and he couldn't get the floppies to load anything. Just before I was leaving to take it back, he got the manual online and told me to look on there and see if I can check anything else. The simple "get going" instructions were that you insert the floppy BEFORE powering up! The thing worked fine when I did that.. made my tech feel like an idiot.
