8 characters limit on FOLDERS too?

Quiick question:

I'm about to throw a bunch of samples on my cf card.
Just wondering if its possible to have longer FOLDER names or should i stick to the 8 characters limit with them too? :o


edit: Another question: It is the filename PLUS the extension, eg. ".SND" (which means another 4 characters);

So eg. "DirtySnr.WAV" would be valid, even though it's 12 letters(with extension) in total, right ??

yes the file names need to be 8 characters if you're planning to use your card to transfer file to your pc or vice versa

your files will be renamed and wont load with a program. this is if you used xp im not sure if its the same with vista.

i dont know if the .snd counts as part of the 8 characters though.

i will be backing up my files soon, so i am curious about that as well.

It's 8.3, which means the filename can be 8 characters and the extension can be 3 characters. Something like "FILENAME.EXT".

And yes, as far as the computer or the MPC is concerned, folders are just files, so the same restrictions apply to them as well.

Another limitation is that you can only have 512 entries on the root of your media, files/folders are entries.

Mh so a folder should really get 8 chara. , not 12 yes?

Format your media on computer, fat 16.

EVERYTHING (folders/files) gets 8 characters.

Transfer stuff from computer to mpc.

Why do you recommend to format on the pc instead of mpc?
In fact, just i did it with the normal fat option on vista, but the mpc didn't recognized the card (type = ? ? ? ?)
After formating with the mpc it showed type = PC (strange that) and it worked.

Vista format is default fat32, won't work.

mpc format will show up on pc BUT if you have ANY filenames longer than 8 characters WILL be truncated (CUT) to 8 characters and everything we warned you about will come to light, are you even LISTENING, lol.
