Reviews and questions about the entry-level MPC500
By thedopeshow Tue Jun 30, 2009 12:02 pm
Hi people !

I own a mpc 500 and I´m using it as a production tool and as a live sequencer.
Now I`ve got that problem (I allready phoned akai, but they didn`t know how to answer my question !;-)
Well I think this is standart, but I don`t know how it works :

I produce a sequence with a beat, a baseline and maybe some keys with my mpc.
Then then I mix my sequence with the sample level and I also put some effects on the samples.
So far so good ...

Now when I restart my mpc, I load my sequence and all the prgramms that I need for this sequence.
The sounds are there, but all the mixing things I did, like the sample level and effects are blown away.

So I think I do something wrong while saving the sequence... can anybody tell me how to make it right ?

Thank you !!!

Greetings
Pete

Can you please tell me how you guys do it ?

Well thats such a basic thing ... I create a sequence, save it and want to open it like I saved it.
Or am I thinking in the wrong direction ? do I have to create a Song or a programm ??
I thought a programm only contains the samples ... and out of the program I create a sequence, and the sequence contains the sample levels and effects...

don`t know ...

Thank you for help !

Nope mate, Programs contain sample levels and effects. Sequences contain midi note data: gate (note length) and velocity (max velocity or 127 means sample is played back at its highest level set in the program; min velocity or 0 = no playback).

Basically, you have to save your programs and samples to save your mix. But personally I'd recommend to save your work as a Project, that saves everything into a dedicated folder, so you won't have to worry about what is being saved and what isn't. It also allows you to save your work and get back to it as it was in the moment of saving.

Go to akaipro.com -> products -> MPC series -> MPC 500 and when the page is loaded, choose Docs and Downloads. Then you will see a link to a current OS version (1.31) download link. When you click the link, you are prompted to fill in your name and email (which is highly irritating, AKAI!!!). Once you fill in the required info, you can download the file.

first thank you all for your answers.

I did the update on the new os ...

Thank you for the explainig about the difference between programs and sequences.

But I have to say that I still don`t understand exactly how to use my mpc. It would be great if you could help me.

Thats how I`m doing it:

- I load the programs that contain the samples I want to play with.
- I choose an empty sequence and record my stuff
- I mix it, put some effects on it, I`m done.

So now you said I should save it as a project. But when I go to the load menu to load the project again, where is my sequence ?

I`m sorry for these stupid questions, but I do not understand the system yet.

Could you maybe tell how your workflow is like ?
I think that whould help me very much !

Thanks !!!

After you saved the project, you have to LOAD it as a PROJECT. Go to the load screen and scroll untill you see Load: Project.

Your sequence data (file ALL SQS&SON.ALL) could be found in the same folder where you saved the project. However, for it to be loaded together with programs and samples, you have to load the project file (.PRJ).

Check the manual for further details, it covers all saving/loading operations in detail somewhere in the end if I am not mistaken.

yes. change your record option to "main" rather than "input" and sample your sequence, then save it to a pad.

Laying down the elements...
) Create a new program... for example "2DopeDrums"
) Load some dope drums and assign each one to a different pad/bank
) Go to track mode, make sure you have selected "2DopeDrums" as the loaded program
) Select a tempo (possibly at random)
) Turn the metronome on for play mode
) Push play and just jam out a few ideas to the metronome
) Adjust the tempo if it is not appropriate
) Go to sequence mode, make sure it starts at 1 and ends at bar 2 (or 4/whatever), looping on
) Turn metronome off for play mode and on for record mode
) Back to track mode
) Name the track kick (or whatever)
) Bang out just the kicks
) Select next track, name it snare (or whatever), use your "2DopeDrums" program
) Bang out just the snares
) Rinse and repeat these steps until you've laid out your "2DopeDrums"
) Go to Track Mute and mute a few drum sections
) Now create a new track, name it "Snares2" or whatever
) Bang out a variation of your snares
) At this point you've got your Dope Beat... now it's time to lay down a bassline
) Create a new program, "2DopeBass"
) Load up some dope bass sounds, I prefer to get different sounds from different instruments, not all the same instrument
) Track mode, go to a new track and name it "Bass"
) Mute/unmute some of your drum sounds until you get something you can play a bassline to
) While the drums are playing, tap out a the different bass sounds until you find sounds decent in the mix
) Go to 12 levels mode, select your super Dope Bass sound
) You'll probably need to play with Tune +/- to adjust the root note up/down a bit on your pads,
) I usually try and get it around the middle, but depends if you want more room to go higher or lower with your bass note
) Bang out a bassline
) Mute the bass track you just made
) Create a new track, name it "Bass2" and set the program to "2DopeBass"
) Follow the bass steps to do the same things with some leads/pianos/horns/whatever
) Follow the drum steps to do the same things with FX... sometimes it's fun to throw 12 levels on FX too, go nuts

Sequencing towards creating a song...
) Once you've gotten a ton of tracks together... now you can start putting them together as a song.
) Name your sequence, "2DopeMaster" or whatever
) Copy your master sequqnce to a new sequence. Rename it to Intro/Chorus/Breakdown...
) Mute/Unmute tracks to make it fit the section you need it to work for
) Feel free to either erase and re-record parts that don't quite fit, or... create a new track and record it differently
) repeat sequencer steps until you have all parts ready for your song
) During this phase you could record vocals from a mic, etc... I'm going to skip this part though...

Creating a song...
) I haven't done this in the 500 yet, but I imagine it's the same as the 1k
) Go to song mode
) Set the sequence you want to play first and for how many times to repeat
) Set the next sequence you want to play and for how many times to repeat
) Continue previous step until you've finished the song

Mixing/mastering/FX
) You're on your own here.

Recording the full song...
) If you've got the memory, you could go to record mode and sample off of master to get a .wav file
) You could hook up to a computer and record from your audio input...

Making your first mil...
) Can't help you there, but don't forget to leave me creds.

yes. change your record option to "main" rather than "input" and sample your sequence, then save it to a pad.

But how can i do it if i already have my sequence and i made it like this:
press sequence>record the drum pattern>record a piano pattern and it's finished.

The Dom: What is being recommended to you is called "resampling". MPC can resample its own output by recording it just like you record samples from an external source. To do that you have to go to record mode [Mode] -> [Pad 4] and choose "Main" instead of "Rec In" as your signal source. After that, press "Do it". The screen will change to "Waiting input..." Press play and the current sequence will start being played back and recorded into MPC's RAM at the same time.

Note: select the sequence you want to resample before going to Record mode, because once MPC is ready for recording its output it's impossible to go back and select the sequence without leaving the Record mode.
