Recovery of truncated (cut) .snd and .all files ?

Hi, i upgraded a while ago to the card reader. I was aware about the 8 character limit on the file names. But i accidentally put an old zip into the computer to transfer a beat across without checking the length of characters. Now obviosly the program cannot find all the correct file names. I have two main questions about recovering these files:

1. How would you go about re-building the beat, or is it worth just starting it again and forget about all the individual samples saved as .snd files?

2. on a seperate occasion i put the memory card into the PC and another beat has everything under 8 characters apart from the .ALL file. so when trying to load this file it says file not found, is there a way to recover this at all? mabye by renaming it on the pc?

Sorry its abit hard to explain.

Any input much appriciated.

If you can figure out the original names of your files you should be be able to load it all again, no problem. Rename them on the mpc, not pc.

Or you can manually load them back into the mpc (painful, lotta guessing) one by one. Good thing is that nothing is lost at all ONLY your filenames are jacked up so if you can manage to load yousounds back to the original pads via trial and error, then you will be able to get your sequences back to normal.

I've been through this and it took me a few days to get a song back together, haha. After that though, I stayed within the solution, I ALWAYS format my media on pc fat16. ALWAYS use 8 characters or less. That way I can slap my media inside the mpc or pc at anytime and all files names will remain good.

Yo thanks Lampdog appriciate the help, so you mean the program still knows the names of the files its looking for, its just the .snd files all look the same now theyv been shortened? Is there anyway to view the full names of the files its looking for, to aid in re-naming, or is it just a guessing game like you said?
Also with this seperate occasion where i made sure all the .snd and the .aps files were under 8 characters, but forgot about my .all file, is there a way to get the mpc to find that file again by renaming? it just says the error "File not Found!" as i guess the name on the mpc is longer than the actually one now on the memory card.

APS only loads the exact name WAV/SND/PGM's that were last saved within it.

ALL only loads the exact name SEQ that were last saved within it.

If those names were cut after the save, then you'll need to remember the names and rename them to their old
filenames. When you try and load the APS, doesn't it tell you "Can't load sample~1.wav"? Something like that, write that filename down and try and match it to a cut filename that looks similar.

APS and ALL are proprietary Akai files. So nope, no looking into them to see old filenames.

It's a manual process, sorry.
