Has the 4000 got..??

Hello 4000 users. I am considering getting a second hand MPC 4000 because I need the extra outputs and some features I think it may have that my 1000 with the latest JJ doesn’t. However, I need clarification on some of the functions of the 4000 because I can’t seem to find the specific answers on this forum. I have been sampling for more than 15 years so I know exactly what I need from this box!!

Hopefully you guys can answer my questions and help me out!

Does the 4000 have all of the following or which ones does/does not have?:

1. Does it have alternate and crossfade looping?
2. Does it have a piano roll midi note editing screen?
3. Does it have a visual editing screen for q-Link midi data editing?
4. Does it have quantize strength?
5. In trim, once deciding on a number of slices can you add and divide existing slices?
6. Does it have an auto-chop function with the ability to then assign chops to a programme and pads?
7. Can you leave the USB cable in the computer for transferring and backing up files whilst in normal operation?
8. Can all q-links be used in conjunction on a whole programme as well as individual pads?
9. When saving can you create a folder and then save everything as a project?
10. When trimming a sample can you audio scrub the end point and the start point of a sample?
11. Does it have a zero crossing function for removing clicks for both start, end and loop points?
12. Can you change loop point in a sequence without stopping a sequence?
13. Do you have audio tracks for recording live audio onto a playing sequence?
14. Can you audition samples from the hard drive without loading them?
15. Can you copy,paste and insert in the drum grid/midi edit pages

2)no piano roll, editing is done in a matrix style
3) I don't do too much with q-link, there is a q-link editing screen in the "sequence edit" area

5)I don't quite understand, you would have to slice the new sample seperately
6)no auto chop, you assign the regions, and then you can slice to a program
7)usb transfer does not work while sequencer is running. however all editing features are available while the seq is running.

9)yes very easy, save memory to folder operation
10)pads 13, 14, 15, & 16 control audio playback in sample mode(to some extent yes)
11)I don't know????
12)I don't think so
13)almost, check the newbie bible for details
14)YES, it is a little slow though for longer samples.

Shame about the Piano roll and dividing slices function, but you can't have everything!

you cant have everything


you can easily set up an audio editor on your computr and use it to set regions.


right click on sample in ak.sys.
choose edit
this launches your pre assigned editor(mine is peak 5)
set regions, press save.
viola the regions are set in your sample on the mpc 1,2,3...

Yes MPC5000 proves you can't have everything, but you could have everything

yes, the mpc4k DOES have a piano roll screen. on the main paige, you need to select the program type. the default is DRUM, and you see an icon that looks like little pads. -in the seq edit page you get the matrix look.

switch DRUM to INST, the icon will change to little keyboard. the transpose option will appear. go to seq edit, and you will see the piano roll view. also in the step edit paige, all the notes will apear w/the note name (C2, A#4), and midi note number. in DRUM mode, the step edit page shows midi note number, pad bank, and pad number.

Hi, does the 4K have "Patch Phrase" and what features is it missing compared to the 2500 (JJOS)??

It doesn't and there is few functions that it misses, but I'm really not concerned about that. Like someone else said before, this machines are on completely different level. What is important to me is that the 4K has fully fledged sampler built inside.

pretty much...that is a major feature...being able to load up real instruments from akai and other sample cds...I loved that and it was a major factor in me getting my 4k
