I'm wonderin tho, what's the price range for a vinyl? Mainly when shoppin at actual record stores tho, and not thrift stores (cause that can vary from store to store, obviously).

the reason you didn't find much in that place in the bronx is because i went through it already.

i bought a bike and spent ten years riding all over new york, from coney island to island city. i looked in every goodwill store. i asked people hanging out on the corner if they knew where any records are. i rode down every alley, looked in every dumpster.
digging isn't a casual affair. it's a committment. what you put in, you get out. you're in the best city in the world for digging. nowhere else even comes close. but you're going to have to put in long hours, piss of your girlfriend and alienate your friends and family.

I agree. The worst thing happened about a month ago... I was in a recently condemned building (they were selling off the contents inside but most of it was ruined with fire damage) anyways this was an old warehouse owned by paramount. it was used to store props for films and movies etc.

well I went into one large room and there was a mountain of records on the floor... they were everywhere in the room all on the floor. all of them were filthy, wet, warped, covered in mud... you name it. What a shame.

Thats just damn sad man...

yeah man.. so true. my estimate was... at least 1500 vinyls..

I didn't even go closer to look at the names of the records because I was worried that I might see something good.

yeah that's what hurts seeing some thing you was so close to yet so far.

lucky in the yrs i have doing this i have never seen anything like this,i have been there to pick them up before they got tossed out or burned, i have ran into customers that would buy them then warp them or make clocks out of them, my buddy has some guy selling stuff like that in his store, it's a damn shame IMHO good music should be played loud not show on your wall as art unless your showing the cover then that's cool.

yeah I am doing a show in a couple of weeks at this club downtown.. anyways they have records hanging from strings here and there.. some are nailed to the wall...

I dont even want to meet the person who's idea that was. Normally I wouldn't care about things like that.. cause I didn't pay for the records..... however when those records are no longer being made, the quantity that is stll around is all we have left.

I haven't been digging in months. And I don't have money to drop more than $3-5 on a record. And I'm still listening to new records every **** day. I have a stockpile of records I haven't heard yet that I've gathered from earlier.

(I'm almost tempted to write in all caps on this one. **** it.) DO THE LEGWORK.

You live in NYC, I know it's possible. I live in Missouri and I have found some really nice records and narrowed my collection down to about 16 crates of quality. After selling off some of the records that I find - those 16 crates didn't cost me very much. I usually either pay $1 or $3 a piece and sometimes I'll find one that I can sell for the amount I spent on the rest.

Estate Sales - be the first one there. Other people are doing the same thing.
Garage Sales
Flea Markets (this has been my best friend but I think it's a KC thing)
Antique Stores
I don't even **** with Thrift Stores cause I have bad luck with them but NYC might be different.

Search 'records' in Craigslist. Look for Estate and Garage Sales that show up and be the first one there. Have a $20 and offer it for all if it's a good stash. It'll be so worth it.

Find a dude who has a shitload of records in an antique store and ask him if he has more. Become his friend.

Get creative. I stopped paying more than $5 a record once I figured out that it's not necessary.

Oh and what to buy? Just buy whatever your gut tells you and if you buy enough records you'll start knowing what YOU want. I could tell you what I look for but I look for different stuff than everyone else. Same for everyone else. You have to figure out what kind of records allow you to make the music you want to make.
