Technical questions for the MPC2000xl and the MPC2000
By SC87 Fri Jul 03, 2009 12:31 pm
I hooked up my external cd drive to my MPC yesterday.

I went through the normal route of trying to load sounds. But it kept saying 'SCSI not found' on all 7 SCSI options.

My external cd drive is set to SCSI 1 (no idea if this makes any difference?)... I read the manual but there's not a great deal on this issue and was wondering if anyone had any advice? Maybe I have to format something first? I'm frustrated as I'm guessing it might be something simple.

Also just a bit of a sub-question, I got given an SCSI PC CARD, no plans to use it yet but will it come in handy?

Thanks

I know exactly what you are talking about. the thing is, i suspect that the issue is because of the scsi enclosure is conflicting with the scsi ID on the actual drive. the enclosure has some sort of ID control on it also so the two conflict on the mpc.

if you open it you may be able to disable it by disconnecting that component from the cd rom itself... that is if your cd rom also has an ID configuration aswell....

anyways I wound up removing my cdrom from my enclosure and installed a zip drive.

Hi there, sorry just trying to get my head around this, you think that the SCSI on the MPC (6)... might be conflicting with the SCSI ID from my CD drive?

I have a button on the back of my CD Drive that allows me to easily change the I.D from 0-7.

no.

you know that button on the back of the external cd rom? well open up the case of your external, and you will notice that all you have is an internal scsi cd rom installed in a case (enclosure) .... now notice on back of the actual cd rom (inside the enclosure) that you also have a control to change the scsi ID... but somehow it is getting bypassed or something like that. (not exactly sure) ... well what I was suggesting was to disconnect the component on the enclose that sets the ID... and use only the one on the back of the cd rom itself (most likely by setting the pins.)

I think what he is saying is that possibly the wires to actually make the SCSI ID change to match the number you select on the switch may not be hooked up internally. But in that case, the CDROM drive would probably be on ID 0, which should still work okay.

How exactly are you trying to access the CDROM drive and what kind of CD do you have in the tray? Which MPC do you have - Classic or XL?

Hey I think i've solved it now.

My MPC now recognises that the SCSI CD Rom drive is connected.

But now i've got a new problem... it won't find any files! I use 'Open Window' on the file tab but the document finder thing just appears blank. Any ideas?

Hey, yeah i'm using the original akai cd that comes with the MPC 2000XL. Basically the MPC is recognising that I have an Cd rom drive attached but the file field is and also next to the 'type' field a bunch of ?'s appear.

My guess is that it must just be an incompatible drive.

I dont think so, I had the same issue. The drive should work.

You know what.. take out te cd rom from the enclosure and connect it to the internal scsi port to see if it works from there. for some reason I have a feeling there is an issue with the enclosure and the cd rom. I wound up mounting a zip drive in my enclosure and the only thing I am using from the enclosure is the power supply and the scsi to centronics connection.

No, that is not the problem or you wouldn't be able to see anything at all - the drive would never even appear on the SCSI ID number. If the Type field is showing "????", then it cannot recognize the file types that are on the CD.

Don't you have an MPC2000 Classic, not the XL? If so, then you may not be able to read the format of that CD meant for the XL.

And I'm sorry but I don't agree with mr_debauch because if the internal case ribbon cable is bad, then you'd never get anything to even show up on the ID number.

Are you in the US? If so, I can send you a sample CD I know is compatible with the 2000 Classic and you can test with that. I really think you just haven't yet tried to load the correct type of CD and the Classic is pickier than the XL about what it will load.

I have the 2000xl and the cd that I am using is the akai 2000xl sound library that comes as standard with it.

It's just very strange that it recognises the cd drive but no files appear? Just to note i've loaded files from floppy and they've worked fine.

I am not saying there is an issue with the ribbon cable.. I have an XL... anyways the exact same symtoms occured with my stock XL cd. the drive shows up but it cant see anything what so ever. you push open window and it is only blank. It is not an issue of termination because I had a terminator... i just thought that maybe there might be some sort of issue with the scsi ID or something, because there is some sort of ID selector in the enclosure seperate from the one on the drive itself... the drive is set at ID1 and then mounted in the enclosure that has it's own swtiching system.

Okay, my mistake - I thought you had the Classic, yes, if you have the XL, I would expect it to be able to read the XL CD. Have you tried to read that CD in your PC's CD drive? If it is in Akai format, then you wouldn't be able to but if it is a standard audio CD, then you should be able to see the files. The XL can load from either format.

Okay, it seems the drive is working okay but you cannot load the CD. My offer stands of sending you another sample CD that I know you would be able to read without any problem and we'll see how that one does.
