Sounds like a malfunction. I've heard of instances where the cable connecting the screen comes loose. You may want to pop it open and take a look. If that doesn't work you might have to secure a rental for your gig.

yeah the cable inside is likely to come loose if ya open the 4k and push it up too quickly ... if its completely plugged off your screen turns black - it happened here once ... if so its np ya can just plug it back in ... stripes really sounds like loose cable .... try to open it carefully ... but imo its unlikely that the cable gets loose without opening the 4k (unless the 4k fell down from somewhere ...) did ya open it before?
good luck

I have seen it hundreds of times it is a problem with the that happens unexpectedly. The cost to replace is roughly $200.00 US. It has nothing to do with the connections.

Remeber, I use to work for Akai. Part of my job was Quality Control, I worked there for over a year, so naturally I saw many problems. Incuding lines thru the LCD display. I even had one with so many lines that it looked like a bar code. Akai outsourced the manufacture of the displays. If you haven't experinced a problem so far I doubt that you will because they seemed to develope the lines fairly early.
I saw some units that had obviously been scratched and had been covered with a big glob liquid paper, Some units that had solder in the memory slots, broken locking mechanism for the memory slot, missing parts inside the MPC's, there was even an MPC that thought it was a Z8. That was very early in production of the 4000, later we did not see as many problems. Poor quality control in China. Here in the US custumers did not see many of those problems because many of them were fixed prior to being shipped to retail. Outside of the US I am sure many customers found those problems.

Adrian, thanks for your insight. What about the hard drives? I've been hearing a lot about failures (mine included). Is akai addressing this?

Well, it's not really something that Akai Pro. has to do with. I worked for AMIC (Akai Musical Instrument Corp.) AMIC bought the HDD and installed them. NOT Akai Professional, so I don't know what could be done.

Adrian thanks for the reply. About the early not-so-quality-controlled mpc4000s, where did they usually end up? Japan or Europe?
Thanks

The not-so quality controled units went everywhere. When AMIC closed we had about 16 MPC 4000 that were not working. I was able to buy one of them for $50.00! I played Dr.Fankenstien and resurrected the MPC from the dead. I had to replace the LCD, and CPU, which I got from other dead MPC's. I was also able to get the CD, HDD, Memory, Ib4adt, Ib4d, and Ib48P from left over stock that we were not able to sale because they were open box. The rest of the dead units went to VST for parts.
By the way, I didn't litterally mean that hundreds of units with bad displays, but there was over a hundred.

Thanks adrian. About the cost, that has to be covered by the warranty right?
