No more than a prop for the video just like the microphone. Im sure Talib did'nt spit his vocal through that.

After 1.1, Maschine might be an instrument worth mentioning. Too bad it makes all your samples sound like the bass was rolled off through a cheap digital filter. All the kicks go bwa bwa instead of boom boom or thump thump. I doubt they will rewrite the sample engine to fix it either. Still may make a good sequencer / pad controller.

Thats Hi-Tek banging the Maschine, at 0:16.

I bet my balls that its just a product placement and the beat of the song is still MPC3000 made:)

meh weaksauce, thanks for that anyway though. you know ni sent everybody they could think of one of those I bet just blaze got the first one, I think the reports of maschine sounding so thin are the most troubling because Ni doesn't like to fix shit but I actualy hope this thing works out cause good tools are always good to have, still my mp is going nowhere

Talib - Good Lyricist - Terrible weak voice - Zero Flow - Zero Style - Zero mic presence - very overated and under achiever.

Yeah, that's probably it's biggest problem. It still sounds like software. You don't get that punchy MPC sound.

On the other hand, MOTU BPM does have that MPC sound and then some. Like a 3k and 4k on steroids. The drum synth sounds surprisingly good too. But it lacks some sequencer functions of Maschine and no control surface.

Maschine 1.1 can be used to sequence BPM and you use the pads to trigger BPM sounds. Kinda like how some use a 4K with a 3k. Too bad there is no one groove box that has it all. If 1.1 turns out stable I will probably pick Maschine up as I already own BPM. That is, unless something shows from Roland or Akai at NAMM to change my mind.

Wow, I didn't know about this. I wonder if it will have the vintage LM1/LM2 sounds like the ones Prince used a lot on his early recordings.

I have both NI Maschine and MPC5000 and I was really surprised when I found that Maschine's sound is far more crispy and detailed on all the frequencies. Also the low freq sound more detailed and punchy.

The comparison was made with Maschine vers 1.1 beta running through an apogee duet soundcard. Same samples loaded in MPC and Maschine.

Maybe my MPC sounds worse than the others?!

no, that's just newer mpc sound you hearing

so new mpcs just lost the famous "mpc sound"? it was a big delusion for me hearing a sofware sounding objectively better than my mpc5000!!! mpc is far more "cheap" sounding!!!

anyone can confirm? konc3pt, that's what you're saying?!

Not sure if they tweaked the engine for the update. TBH I did not do a blind test with it with the same samples. Also, all the demos of it I heard sounded real thin too like the old Kontakt 1x engine that Battery used before 3.06. I just assumed it was using the same thin sounding engine and did not look any further.

Make sure you are not comparing the AD on your sound card. Run digital outs from MPC and make sure your gain is set up right. The duets are not as high quality converters as apogees higher end converters so you will loose a touch between the MPC and DAW going in analog. All the MPC generations sound different. The consensus of those who can tell any difference is that the 1k and 2500 are the worse. The 60 for that lof-fi gritty sound, 3k for warmth and punch, 4k for clarity and detail. 5k and 2kxl somewhere in the middle. Maschine will certainly sound more detailed and clear like the 4k. To me it just sounded thin with less punch on the low end.

For those waiting for the Maschine 1.1 update, it still has a way to go.

The midi i/o is crippled so you can't send pitch bend pedal or CC data. It's note on/off only. This cripples it as a sequencer for other modules and for sequencing it from your DAW or MPC. Still pretty much a stand alone that you use to sequence itself.

It still cant truncate, time stretch, or save self contained projects with samples so it is a no go for sampling heads.

I think it's nonsense to record the mpc's digital out, since the mpc DA converters are the secret of the famous "mpc sound".

I've made the MPC5000 vs Maschine comparison connecting them one after the other to my active studio monitors. so...

maschine -> apogee duet main outs -> monitors

and then

mpc5000 main outs -> monitors

I think this is the only way to compare them, main out vs main out. No useless AD DA conversions.

When I'll have some time I'll run the same pattern (w/ same samples) from maschine and mpc main outs, as above, so we'll able to hear the same pattern through:

MPC5000 main outs VS. MASCHINE via apogee's main outs VS. MASCHINE audio export

I'll upload the recordings as soon as I have them... :D

Not since the MPC 3000. The way you are doing it does bypass the extra AD going in and would be good for comparing how the 5k sounds with analog out.

Still would be interesting to see how the digital would compare. That would be more apples to apples comparison without throwing a shootout between the apogee and 5k converters in the mix. Like I hinted at, there is nothing special about the 5k converters. Also, doing it that way it's pure digital with no converters strait to wav. Another variable is that the Maschine bounce quality may be higher than recording it's stereo out mix to your DAW in real time (offline interpolation quality) so recording both real time in the same DAW will give a fair digital comparison.

hi b,

I've opened a new topic (mpc5000 vs maschine) with the link to dload the comparison recordings. unfortunately my souncard doesn't have a digital in, so I have had to record the mpc analog outs...

but to have a comparison I also recorded the maschine going out from an apogee analog out, so same DA conversion have been applied to the recordings.

see specs in the new topic...
