Hi guys. Was wondering if anyone had any recommendations to informative books on sampling. Any kind of 'Art of Sampling' type books out there i might be interested in as a beginner with little experience (I have already got the MPC Tutorials for my 2500)

Cheers,

RB.

are you looking for a "how to sample" type book? or are you just looking for some knowledge?

if you are looking for the "how to", stop now and just start doing it. you dont want to learn someone else's technique. you are better off grinding it out and developing your own style.

if you really want a how to, start listening to sample based hip hop. start identifying samples in other songs and go and listen to the original to see how it was done. also check out the deep crates videos.

but i personally think developing your own technique over time is the best way.

if you are looking for something to read on sampling, google, the lost art of sampling. its an article from sound on sound i think. there are probably a thousand articles on the subject out there

" HOW TO " is for the way & form of learnin.... u need 2 start urself & get ur hands & brains DIRTY.... THE ONLY REAL WAY 2 LEARN..
u can ask how 2, but when it comes 2 SAMPLING, ur really on ur own.....

Too bad their isnt anything like a Scratch magazine on the marketplace newstand anymore :x
That mag was quite informative on hiphop production and whatnot.
Im kinda like you, Generally I just like to read about sampling and the history and application of it etc..
Wax poetics occasionally has some good articles and books as well concerning that topic.

sound on sound mag on their website has a series of articles on the lost art of sampling.
http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/1996_articles/jan96/samplebasics1.html

my girl borrowed a book from the library this week...joseph schloss 'making beats: the art of sample-based hip hop' (wesleyan university press, 2004).
it's on the theoretical, cultural, historical aspect. started reading it last night. seems pretty good.
