It's a hell of a step up from a 500 to a 4k man! I can definitely recommend the 2500 but if you're set on getting the 4k I'm sure you won't regret it.

Buddy, I don't know. You can talk all day about features and this will lead you to nothing. MPC4000 compared to 2500 is the shit, like somebody said this machine is not only about features, 4K is on diffrent level. I have owned MPC1000 which is very familiar to 2.5k and I can say: if you can then grab 4000 and be a happy man. Enjoy sampling and music.

I've was wondering this recently myself.
my buddy and I both have mpcs.. he has the 5000 and I have the 2500..
I was gonna get a 5000, but JJOS put me over the edge and I got the 2500 instead.. Plus I didnt care bout some of the other features, like the synth, and extra qlinks, etc.. but the screen.. that would nice..

but like You said.. the 5k even has a 128mb limit.. even though it does allow the 64mb of onbaord ram to pair with the ram upgrade for 192mb total, the 4000 can take a 512mb stick.. I even have a Roland Jung G synth that samples, and doesn't hold a candle to the mpc2500 when it comes to sampling and even IT takes a 512mb stick of ram..
what the hell was akai thinking with the 2500 and 5000 not increasing the ram spec to at least 256 if not 512??

The synth is a gimmick - I heard the synth sounds are crap on the 5000..

I wasn't impressed either with the synth feature of the 5000 when I played around with the 5k in a store. You could buy a nice standalone synth for the price difference between a 4k and a 5k
