Shopping Your Beats....

I live like 15 min outside of Boston, and there aint much poppin off out here in regards to industry networks. The only cats that I have run into are wannabees frontin like they got made connects. Thats why I initiated this thread, to get the proper direction regarding geographics. And as I suspected NY, and LA are th spots.

Look at it like this every piece of music that makes it on the air onto the shelves every artist that gets famous they have to go through NYC first.The main offices for the biggest record labels/distributers in the world are pretty much all in Manhattan.Even if your signed to some down south label most of them are distributed through Universal which is where...NYC...I am not pro NYC by any means but it's just the plain truth even everything that comes out of L.A. has to go through NYC before we even here of it.TRL,106 and park all filmed in NYC

alot of talented cats are from boston but go elsewhere, theres people around doin' there thing with an underground kinda buzz just not as many as in NY/LA or whatever (insert major city name here). And don't forget man they got plenty of wannabes there too. It also depend on what kind of ish you do.

Naw, that's d-dot aka Derick Angeleti. I know him from back in the day. @@@@ and some of his folks started calling me "ddot" (like .com) last year and it stuck.

If you are a farmer you would move to Oklahoma...Got a car design idea? go to Detroit....If you make music you have to be where it is also..L.A. However with modern tech, (internet, CDs, digital formats, etc.) you can make music anywhere and send it to anyone. But nothing beats a personal relationship, just like a email can never compare to a love letter. Contacts and your music library are your biggest assets. You must think outside the box in order to get ahead. It's 90% biz and 10% talent.. Here's an idea: Go online and get some acceppella CD singles.. Find the tempo on them and put your beats behind them. Hook up with some DJz who make mix tapes and some boot-leggers at the flea market...Even press up some CDz to pass out as promotional use only..You don't want legal problems in a major music city at an early stage....This will get your name out there.. Meantime make sure you read as much as you can about music publishing..It's the root source of your $$$..Only professionalz make it...You can make beats all day as a hobby but when you're ready to make a living off of it master your skill..Don't be discouraged by cats who rap and make thier own beats...Nothing compares to a Timbaland, Swizz, Knottz, or JustBlaze beat..That could be you!!. Last but not least..If you got a MPC keep it, but if not get a Open Labs Neko 64...It's expensive but you will set your standards to where noone can touch you and they have to respect a person who does something noone else is doing..a.k.a.-Thinking outside of the box!! Chances are there is someone in your area that is doing his thing. The main thing about getting noticed is getting it in the right hands. I started giving my tracks to friends etc that wanted to play my beats to their peeps because they enjoyed them, but I noticed that they wern't just taking the cd's and putting it on their shelf, they were telling other folks about me, and burning copies for others to enjoy. You can't go off what your mom and sister are telling you about your music, you can't even listen to your close friends, of course they are gonna tell you what you want to hear, so get the opinions of other people. When I hear folks I don't know say they've heard of" Cream.of.Beats," it makes me feel good, and I've only gave away a few cd's.. maybe 20.. if that. Last week A guy that watches Eminem's house's called me to say he wanted to shop my music. I'm not sure if any of you guys know about Phat Kat, but he's blowin up (as far as an underground artist) and he told Baatin (from slum village) that "them dudes are ready." Guilty simpson (Dilla's cousin)got a copy of some early tracks I gave to a Dj (Houseshoes is one of the main underground protional Dj's in the D).. now he wants tracks. The list is getting bigger, and I haven't officially released a cd.
My point is, get your music out there.. it will speak for itself. Posting your music on here, or anywhere else is nothing.. chances are folks tell you your music is great just so you will say the same thing when they post their music.. that s#it is fake. Your music can sound amazing, and you won't get any replies.. more hate. Folks that don't know you tell the truth, and if the tracks are any good, the word will spread. There's no better promotion than word of mouth. You can live in a town of 5 people, and if you music is good, them same 5 people will talk about you... you will be the biggest thing in the area, and when someone new comes to town and mentions music, who's name do you think they will bring up? If your in a bigger city, you have more competition, so work harder. Come up with your own style, be different.. we already have enough mannie fresh's and lil johns.. use them as an example/role model, but expand on it.
I'm gonna stop now because I'll probably get some messages about "who the hell am I, and all that other BS) Yea, I'm a starvin artist just like the rest of us, but I can honestly say that I see the light at the end of this tunnel.. something is gonna happen, but I'm not moving anywhere, I'm not trying to get enough money to promote anything, and I haven't sold a single cd to anyone (yet) and the name is still spreading like wildfire. I have no idea who will call me next.. each day is full of surprises. Personally I think money is the biggest reason why people don't make it. You have enough cash to relocate so you do it, or you have enough cash to mix master, duplicate and get thing done, so you do it. What some of you don't realize is that when your hungry, you try harder. If you only had the MPC and no money to buy anything else, you would find a way to not need anything else. So go make more beats, and don't stop untill you feel that no-one can phuck wid you. Make yourself the number one producer, and don't settle for that wack sample just beacuse your tired of searching. It may take days to complete a track.. some of my beats been un-complete for months.

I have never personally used the Neko64, but before I buy anything ,I research the forums, websites, and reviews..My local Music store doesnt' carry it but from the reviews, the only bad thing is the price and the size..But it beats having your EQ strung all around the room and you rolling around in a chair to get to it when you have an idea. The Neko64 puts it right there.. However, the MPC is the best thing to get if you only make beats. The point I was making is that with modern tech you can do just as much as a big label can do and even possibly even make a living locally. There are commercials, colleges who may need non-musical recordings of seminars, pastors that want their sermons recorded, and my secret list goes on..That's why I say the neko64.. The MPC1K is tight though..It's mobile and it's like a open drum machine.. But it just depends on your companies goals...Remember just because everyone is doing it don't make it right..you have to seperate yourself to reduce competition...Jesus was never doing what majority of the ppl was doing... Yeah the field is so competitive right now it's crazy just got back from
Dynamic Producer conference in New York and there are some young cats out of Miami and the south who are making crazy mad sick beats so you
have to do something pretty spectacular in order for the Majors to
want to be interested in you and you do need a history of sorts your
mom or your girl telling you your joints are ahight wont get you into
the major leagues is right just bring the heat and you will not be denied.

No one gives a rats @ss what you used to make to make your tracks. It aint like they're sitting there saying "Damn! this cat used a 4K. Must have run his kick through a 1073. Lets cut him a check!" It aint the machine, its the man. If you got heat, ...then you got heat.

i plan on going to a recording institute(bypassing the college route) and hope to get a job engineering or working a sound studio for movies or music, no real preference.


I'm not worrying about the quality of the school because I know it is top notch but what are the chances of me finding a steady job in a studio? Pay I would be expecting?

any help would be cool
