16 characters filename limit

hello,
i have lots of files in the same folder with always the same first 16 characters in the filename.
the mpc see them as the same file !
is it normal ?

If you're on mac i can really recommend a programm called "A better Finder Rename 8"




But one thing i wanted to ask about this 16 characters limit:

Is there a Programm (Mac or PC) that checks files if they are compatible with this 16-character limitation?
For example:

if i got two files
blablablablablablablablablabla1.wav and
blablablablablablablablablabla2.wav it gives me an warning that these names might produce an error (file names are equal in the first 16 characters)

but if i got
01blablablablablablablablabla1.wav and
02blablablablablablablablabla2.wav it won't give me a warning. (file names are different in the first 16 characters)

Is there a program that can do that?! Yould be really useful for MPC users! :)

If anyone knows of such a program that will add numbers in front of a file name like that, I'd definitely be interested as well. It would save alot of time and prevent us from having to manually rename files, which we all know can be a slow process.

I've used other file re-naming software before. But they rename the entire file-name. It makes things more complicated when trying to recall what the name of the file originally was.

If I'm missing something with the file renaming software I've used, I hope someone would know....
Nym or Lamp hopefully?

ck rename = freeware

yes, it can add whatever to the front or back of the filename or replace it completely, number it sequentially
skip number ie, file02, file04. whatever, and really easy pc program to use, doesn't take up much space AT ALL.

Name it your way is frustrating to use imo.

SMH.....A program just to rename your samples........SMH....Thats silly........
Highlight all the samples ....right click....rename.......Make it less than 16....Abbreviate.....lol
Not hard...and prolly quiker than openin up a program to do it....

When you have A LOT of samples to rename this method wont work at all...
In my case ive been producing for about 9 years before i got my MPC so... i had sh*tload of samples with alot mor than 16.. in folders with subfolders with subfolder inside those hahah
For those who have many samples to rename just find those that are over 16 is a hard job.
For this my recomendation goes to FileBoss v2 - http://www.theutilityfactory.com/
It can find files bigger than a certain numer of caracters, then you just select them all and use a bunch of "rules" to auto rename them...

as of this week, I do this in MPC Maid.

just drag in the samples you want, it renames them..
then you have to EXPORT those samples to a new folder, and MPC Maid truncates the names at 16 characters.

you can NOT just drag in the sounds and save the program normally (even tho it will say that it renamed x amount of files when you dragged em in) You have to export, for the new file names to take effect since the renamed files are renamed & sitting in RAM until you EXPORT em.

It kills two birds w/ one stone tho.. cause you renames you files and save a program to load directly in to the mpc.

wow, thanks, this programm kicks ass :)

would be great if there were such a programm especially for the 2XL-Version as well (Intrument Programms, Pitch and Filter Envelope, LFO etc.etc.)

Anybody knows how the 2XL-File format works?
i found this for the "normal" mpc1000 format http://mybunnyhug.com/fileformats/pgm/
maybe someone could write a MPC Maid 2XL though its open source?
