Well, first thing to do is to go the programs menu screen and hit all the pads and make sure they respond and don't do any funny business like what I discovered after taking one home.

You might want to check the floppy drive too by bringing a few "new" floppy disks and trying to format it. If the floppy drive's bad, you'll get an error message. And, since you're using brand new floppies, you'll know it's not the floppies that are causing the issue.
Other than that, unless you have time to really sit with the machine, bring in a 10 input soundcard or mixing board and cables to test the outputs, you're just gonna have to go on hope.
But, for $400, I really can't see you going wrong.
I paid $900 for mine and, even with all the issues that I've faced with it thus far, it does work and that is considerably less than what they go for on ebay.
At this point, I probably just need to replace the pads and buy a floppy drive cleaner kit and she should be in tip top shape.
Also, NO, the 3k is not "exactly" the same in functionality as the 2k. First off, the timing is going to take some time to get used to. As much as it is praised, it takes some time to figure out which swing settings are the best fit for drums. And, stuff you might take for granted from using the 2k, like the undo button, etc..., require a much more convoluted process on the 3k. You have to enter the Erase screen and hit the pad with the sounds you want to delete and select the time period that you want the instances to be deleted from. But, if you have other instances that you want to keep, this WILL delete those also. The only other options are step edit, which we all know can be tedious as hell, or real-time erase just like on the 2kxl.
That's my only real complaint thus far, though.
There are some other idiosyncrasies, like having to save a .PAR file along with your .ALL file in order to save stuff like the bpm's, time sig, etc... But, that's not that big a deal.
But, like I say, for $400, you can buy it, and, if it is fully operational, you CAN sell it for a profit.
