apologies if this is old news to you, it may be it may not be.
say you're in a band, you notice the drummer and the bass player always having little huddles when you practice. you listen in on the sly (you're just the guitar player or something) and what they're doing is trying to coordinate the bassline with the kick drum. no matter what the pattern is they're trying to run it so most of the time whenever there is a structural bass note played, the drummer just happens to be hitting a kick, and you notice how much effing tighter your playing sounds when they get this together. and how when every once in a while the bass player runs 16ths or something and the note is between kicks and unaccented, that the fact of that gives it a whole other kind of accent, like an offbeat accent, and it sounds good as hell too.
just something to think about. in a good funky band the bass player and drummer are LOCKED! they are the rythm section and thats how they do.
