Exchange tips and tricks for the Akai MPC4000

Basically, my MPC 4000 will freeze after it has been on for roughly a minute (literally I can count 60 seconds). It freezes regardless of what I am doing, meaning I have to resort to switching it off. I try to use the buttons or jog dial but to no avail nothing will budge. I've searched the forum but can't find a topic that remedies this problem.

Also, this is a second-hand unit and I haven't really used it myself (I'm just going through the manual learning the different functions at the moment) - haven't even produced a beat yet lol. :?

Any help would be appreciated...

Most likely the hard drive is causing the problem. Open the MPC up and disconnect the hard drive. Power up the unit and see if that corrects the problem.

Thanks for the swift reply - I'll check this out today. It's my first time opening the machine so should I follow the servce manual (is it easy enough?) or just take it to a specialist?

Well, I would consider opening it on your own. Good side of this is that you can fix this problem if it's about hdd or memory. You won't pay for this and you will be able to do it next time if you will need to change hdd or add ram or install expansion boards. The bad side of this is that, you can **** something up and that might cost you more than easy fix from specialist.
I remember when tip of jack stucked in my main outs and I had to fix it on my own. I have no experience when it comes to fixing machine etc. so I guess everyone is able to open up the unit if he fallows manual.
