after a few years of producing mainly on sp-303 and a sp-606 (with broken effects unit) I finally decided to get into the world of akai. I managed to get myself a 2kxl with max ram, 8 outs, and effects board for $270. talked the guy down from $300 because the backlight is out ("I swear it just quit working earlier today!"). the screen looks fine otherwise (no burn, dead lines, etc) otherwise I wouldn't have bought it.
the dude I got it from said he had gone through a couple zips and when he sold it to me there wasn't one installed in the machine. he gave me a couple drives and a SCSI CD drive with it.
this morning I cracked open the machine to install a zip and here's my problem- I'm not sure how to properly wire power to the zip drive. this is what it looks like inside:
at first I assumed the little connector with red & black wire was for the zip drive, so I busted open a molex connector and wired the 5V to red and ground to black. wired it all up and turned on the MPC only to hear a horrible clicking sound.. I killed it and opened it up and the zip drive smelled awful like it burned up. fortunately the MPC boots fine still.
my question is really simple but I couldn't find info on it anywhere & I don't have a multimeter to check the voltages myself. My suspicion is that the previous owner stupidly tossed out the proper power connector, perhaps it goes to that 4 pin connector to the left of the screw in the bottom of the photo. Please advise me on how to wire power to a zip or CF reader! thanks!
