I got my Teac at a university surplus sale for $15, check your local hifi shops too.

they make smaller ones? I just need one to resample drums thru tape.

Yes. Not all reel to reels are the large table top style. Mine is quite compact and looks just like this

yea you can actually find some decent reels on the cheap these days. scour your local flea markets, pawn shops, surplus sales, garage sales, ebay, your friend's grandma, etc.

half the time you'll find someone willing to straight up give it to you just because they're so excited that anyone would actually bother to keep the format alive.

Just picked up a phillips 1/4" reel 2 reel....From my parents attic. I didnt even know it existed! My mom just told me to go into the garage on the weekend and it was sitting there, extra reels and cables (the cables look something like midi cables, with like, 7 pins)
Now I just have to clean it (20+ years in storage) and see if I can connect it into my setup...

Check it out:

What's good w/ DJ's who have brolic mirrors in front of their decks ? A homie of mine said he did it to pay better attention to his hands and work on his cuts .

I have mine set up in front of a window .

i don't really see the difference between looking in a mirror and watching your own hands. except maybe watching your own hands in a mirror could be disorientating. i put that mirror there to create the illusion of extra space in an otherwise smallish room. i guess it's also nicer than facing a blank wall when you're working the platters. it's a hellish surface to have in an audio environment with it being so reflective and all.

re: all those reel to reels,
nice machines one and all. they do need a lot of regular maintenance for a long and healthy existence though. between lubrication, demagnetizing and general cleaning of crap. i'm waiting for a nice deal on a fixer upper. think it would be a great project.
