well also, now ordinary people can afford a tape setup. it no longer costs 5 grand for those tape decks (they are a 10th of the price used). but hey, they were built as pro machines. I mean even with an 8 track reel to reel you need another tape deck to mix down on (or at least that is how I picture it in my head) .. I am kind of a new jack when it comes to all that analogue stuff... but I had an awesome time playing around with my tape decks... I used to sometimes play around with the slap back delay trick (you know the one where you run the left line out to the right record in etc..)

yeah, you're right- it's a pretty big investment and digital is too damn convenient (atleast for me) to leave out entirely. I don't want to spend time splicing tape

I'd rather check out the portico unit and buy from a place where I can return it if it's not worth the money.

i foolishly bought the st-224 twice convinced that it was a mini sp1200 but the sequencer and pattern setup made it unusable for me i could neva get the hang of it.

the novation k-station that is some cold albiet smooth electro shit not feeling it.

the korg prophecy had some nice sounds tones and controllability but was not fun to program.

edirol pcr midi controller mini keys are not the shit and the mod wheels wack.

so int total prolly wasted 1,800

dam that hurts could do with that cash right about now, lol

still at at one point i had over 400 records now i got less then 80 so u can imagine how much money was wasted im just looking at the bottom line, and the time i was diggin i did not now about the blog sites and torrents

so shit was a waste

what else bout a sp505 and korg esx1 when perhaps i should just copped an mpc from the outset but i did kinda enjoy them machines but the limitations caused me to outgrow they usefulness.

but wont say they was a complete waste

i agree.
with every groove you put your needle to, your ear will grow better and you get a better taste of what you are specifically on the hunt for.. so many wack records with with that one gem on it though!(which i'm sure is still there looked over)

i started with a esx my mate lent me for 6 months before my 2500. i was getting crazy with it at the stage of sampling and loading all my own sounds(the way it is supposed to be used imo-from scratch). and then i got my mpc. i wish i held off for another month just so i could master the esx, after i found workarounds for the limitations. because it is a dope machine after all if it's used it in an original way..

90% of my emcees first album was all on the emx and esx(they both umm, fell off a truck i believe) but those beats were fyre. emx is much more of a beast though!

The ST-224 was one of my first pieces gear and I learned it inside out. The sequencer did suck and couldn't even sync properly to MIDI clock, but the sampler was easy to use and imparted a nice lo-fi sound to everything. Effects and resampling were a nice bonus.

I just sequenced it with Sonar and it was ok. I used it for the drums on quite a few songs in my first two albums.

On the other hand, the K-station and Prophecy are two pieces I'd like to try. I've used V-Station and liked the sound, and I'd also like to have a physical modelling synth like the Prophecy (had a Yamaha VL70-m once and it was cool). Of course, I'm a synth freak, but I see how these synths are not for everyone.

I'd go for the KS rack out of all of them and the real thing does sound better imo than the VST (I had almost every Novation lol..Bass Station, Drum Station, A-Station, K-Station, Nova, KS-Rack and a craked copy of the V-Station)
It's a nice synth but you have to program it and what you have to learn with it is to back off the reverb cos it makes it sound bad in the mix imo presets are awfull and all drenched in way too much FX
It's quite plastic sounding but nice in it's own way...I wouldn't ever use it for bass though

one thing i do find nice about electribes is that you adjust them and do all the work while they are rolling. just leave them playing and then do your adjusting to get what you want.

i like them.. they have good sound.

I totally agree. You can practically do anything and everything while the sequencer is still rolling, without having to stop anything. That was always a big plus for me as well

i like the esx has the best fx and a smooth sound but the way chopping is implemented and the fact you can asign any pad to cut off any other pad is kinda wack ur limited to using the two 2 pad mute groups.

not very useful for getting deep into chops.

i also like the lofi sound of the st-224 but making pattern/sequences was such a pain i could not get into the flow.


the k-station has one of the best keyboard layouts but the sound i aint really feeling however syth heads i know can get deep into it and make crazy sounds with it, im more into rompler and synth vst's.

love the prophecy sound if sound of that prophecy was in the k-station interface that would be insane.

The pads on the mv are horrendous compared to the 2000xl.
