Just something I threw together for dirtying up softsynths and clean samples. Thought it might be of use to my Live heads. This uses effects exclusive to Live 8.

The key to the 1200's sound aside from the bit rate is the SSM2044 lowpass filter chip that sits between the "low quality" D/A stage. Lots of rolloff from 10k and up with a nice lowend bump with scooped mids. The sp's sample rate gives it that ring mod sound.

I had a big folder of sounds both sampled through the 1200, recorded through the main outs (these have fast release envelopes on the filter) and recorded at 24 bits/ 44.1K and a/b'ed them to create the rack.

The rack has a ring modulator, redux, 2 lowpass filters, a 1 band notch eq and a saturator in that order with the important stuff assigned to macros. Play with the settings depending on what kind of material you're using (melodic, percussive, bassy, trebly, etc.) It's pretty convincing to my ears. Curious what folks to have clocked a lot of time on an sp think...

Enjoy.

I thought there was more to it than that. I found on my friend's SP1200 that the ring was achieved most when slowing down sped up samples even without the lowpass filter. This ring is not heard in other samplers with the same bitrate.

is there a free sp1200 vst effect for pc anywhere? maybe one you could run on individual channels in a mixer to create a close to accurate sp1200 sound? just curious. i use basically a bit crushcer to try and do this but its obvioualy not as good.

There was a guy a couple of years ago who made a plugin called sd2100 which was his software version of the sp1200. He also made an fx version of the plugin called fx2100. Both sound pretty nice. I think the fx2100 is more of what you are looking for as you can insert it on different channels in your DAW for the effect. Try google and see if you can find a download somewhere. It was a free plugin as well. Dont want anyone to think i am promoting pirated software!! hope this helps.

The fx1200 plugin didnt sound like the sp. The effect was not bad but wasn't even close to the sp sound.
I think the choice of the plugin depends on the material you wanna use. Some plugins sound good with drums but are not so nice on stuff like epiano. I also recommend to treat audio as you would do it on the SP. No stereo, speed up before sampling (or speed up in DAW and render the sample with the plugin. Now use the rendered sample and pitch it down again.)

Endless opportunities.

mda degrade
Decimort
Wavosaur samplerate convertor (without antialiasing)

.....for a trained ear. Sure. But some folks dont care and just want to get a lofi fx that sound a little bit (or 12 little bits ;)) like the SP and this is possible.

Dont get mad. I guess its just a matter of time when there will be a software that sound 99% exactly like the 1500-2000$ machine.
But you know what.
The machine is sexier nonetheless.
Its not just the sound. Its the sequencer, its the workflow with the limitations and faders and buttons and the little display the usage of floppy disks and the overall look. Its the feeling you get when you sit in front of it. ALL THAT is the SP and if I had the money I would buy one even if there already were a software with exacly that sound.
