i reckon 500 quid would be pushing it. you're not going to get very good value selling it. you must be really tight for space if you can't find room for a 1000. maybe hang on to it till you get more room.

It's not just the MPC, I need to fit mixer, Nova desktop, MPC, macbook, cables and guitar fx pedal board and of course audio card, so I'll need another PC desk or something; at the moment I keep most of them in a box and put them on the table when I need them.
I might keep the MPC and hook it up via midi to Reason or something...

So why did you buy them if you knew you didn't have space??

I did in my old place and I thought I would have had enough space in my new one as well, now the choice is between dinner table or a dedicated area for my music gear.

I'd certainly consider this - if for no other reason than at the moment quite a few users seem to be upgrading from 1000s to 2500s. A look through ebay.co.uk will show you there are no shortage of mpc 1000s.

If you really had to sell it, I'd say around 400 pounds is a closer price you'll get. I paid under 400 for mine and it had the pad upgrade, additional memory and loads of sounds.

On a side note - I'd also think about holding on to it - given the godawful stuff Akai is coming out with now I can see these boxes retaining their value if not even going up a little bit...

I guess I'll try to hook it up with Reason and decide, but I think I'll most likely try to keep it and get rid of the Nova, the mixer and the guitar pedal board (and replace it with some VST in case, but I remember Reason having a badass distorsion unit)

If you've got the right software, using your audio card/software as a mixer works really well. There is nothing like having a real mixer to get work done, but you can wing it pretty well with software.

The nice thing about the MPC 1k is that you can use it as a controller only or use it as instrument. At the very least it might help save you from needing to pick up a dedicated hardware drum controller later. I demo'd the MPD32 a while back and found that it was alright, but given the cost I'd rather just keep the 1k since I already invested in it.

Ok, I guess you've convinced me in keeping the MPC for all my sampling and sequencing needs and rig it up to some other software for the extras.
One last question, not 100% related; I saw last night a video for Maschine by Native Instruments, I drooled a bit when I noticed it can use the 16 pads as a classic TR-style step-sequencer. There is no way to do this on a MPC, not on Akai os or JJ, am I right?

I'm 95% sure JJOSv2 has a grid edit that can use pads TRx0x style... can't remember if this was removed for XL or not. Plus there is also pattern mode which might rock your socks.

I know about pattern mode, and I really love it, though it crashes quite often on JJXL, I'll try to find out about grid edit, apparently it works like this:
Input of events

If a pad is hit, the event of the position currently assigned to the pad will be inputted into the cursor position.
The position assigned to the pads is as follows.


For example, if PAD1, PAD5, PAD9, and PAD13 are hit in the state of the above figure, an event will be inputted as shown in the following figure.


If PAD1, PAD5, PAD9, and PAD13 are hit once again in this state, an event will be deleted as shown in the following figure.


If PAD2, PAD6, PAD10, and PAD14 are hit in this state, it will be inputted as follows.


If PAD6 and PAD14 are hit in this state, an event will be deleted as follows.


Thus, an event will be deleted if the pads of the position containing an event is hit.
