first thing i try to do is open the sound in a wav editor. sometimes you can just delete pops and crackles and because they are so short you cant even hear the difference. your sound just ends up a few milliseconds shorter.
then i will try to help it out with eq's. its usually easy to remove static from a kick with eq's because the kick is all low and mid range and the static is high. you can also do this with the filter on an mpc cause its a lowpass filter.
for snares and hihats eqing is harder because the static may lie in a frequency range you dont want to lose. i'll always try eqing first because sometimes you can reduce the static to acceptable levels, where other sounds will hide it, but if thats not working at all i usually try the noise reduction features in cool edit. for that ideally you want a sample of the sound you want to get rid of. you set the noise profile to the sound you want to get rid of and sic it on the sound you want to clean. this doesnt work perfectly though. its best on hums and constant noises, and not very good at crackling, and if you do to much noise reduction, it will leave wierd flangy artifacts in the sound, so you need to be light on the touch with it. other programs have better noise reduction but im not familiar with their ins and outs.
if none of that stuff works i ask myself do i really need this sound? and if the answer is yes i learn to love the static.
and static - with a little delay and reverb - can be a lovely thing.
